Comments Thread For: Joshua Could Lead Boxing Like Tiger Woods Led Golf, Says Hearn

IBF, IBO, WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua can be a "flag-bearer" for boxing in the way Tiger Woods was for golf, according to his promoter. Joshua was widely acclaimed for his stunning 11th-round stoppage of Wladimir Klitschko in a world heavyweight title bout at London's Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

I get what he's trying to say, but it's really apples to oranges on so many fronts.

Tiger changed the economic landscape of an entire sport alone. Made all of his competitors and friends millionaires. Joshua won't get close to doing that. Boxing is too ****ed up.

Further, Tiger was a mysterious guy (we now know why). He had a weird aura about him that left people dumb founded. This added with the general complexity of golf made him outsized in the minds of viewers. Joshua is very open and does a lot of fan engagement. You feel like you know the guy, and boxing is very familiar even to people who don't watch.

I won't even unpack the class issues/differences with the two sports.

Bottomline: AJ has a chance to be a sports icon. No comparison to Tiger Woods though. That was, and still is unexplainable.

      He definitely could be.

      HW ☑
      KOing mfers ☑
      Nice guy ☑
      Speaks well ☑
Young guy in epic shape ☑
      Handsome mfer (no ****) ☑

I mean idk what this guy gots going against him really, maybe the ****** thing is about the only thing that could be spun badly about him & that might still be a stretch. He's like a made up movie perfect cardboard cutout of what a sports role model should look like.

        Yup.

HW is the only division where you can be confident he can rule over a long period of time. As long as he beats the 2 or 3 genuine threats he can feed off bums for the rest of his career and keep dominating.

Wilder has a big punch but is an awful, awful boxer. Any half decent boxer should be able to avoid his windmills and knock him out. Ortiz is about 49 years old. Klit has been beaten. Parker is a bum. Fury is the only real challenge as he is very unorthodox but even him, coming off a long layoff and having to shift so much weight Joshua should be able to beat.

After that who else remains? There's a few young HW's coming up in the UK who could maybe challenge him down the line but i doubt they'll be good enough to be honest.

        Joshua has the full package.

He has the looks and ''aura'' for superstardom.

Not sure if you follow golf but people were obsessed with understanding his preparation, fitness, diet, etc. There were books written about this stuff. Golf is by far the hardest sport to compete in. What he did and the rate he won at is still mind boggling to anybody who has ever tried to play that game.

It has more to do with golf itself than tiger personally. People just didn't (and still don't) understand it.
