I think this does at least deserve a serious unbiased answer.
No offense to Jack, but boxing was a hell of a long way from where it is now in his era. His biggest fights (thatI know of)
were against Ketchel, Jeffries, and Willard. Ketchel, although very skilled for the period, only weighed 160 lbs. for that fight, and he was what, 5'7 or 5'8? And he still managed to drop Jack with ine shot. Then there's Jeffries, who had retired and ballooned to over 300 lbs. He had to be coaxed out of retirement by the racist promoters, he didn't want to fight anymore. When he finally decided to take the fight, he had to starve and steam off 75 or 80 lbs. just to get to the right weight, which still didn't mean he was in true fighting shape. He still made it to the 15th round I think with a younger, prime Johnson. And then there's Willard, who represented the first time Johnson had faced an opponent with size and even rudimentary skills. He loses by KO. To get to the point, Jack Johnson is a defensive genius, but Ruiz is trash? I have never liked Ruiz, but watch them, they don't fight that differently. Johnson wrestled his way through fights, if Jeffries hadn't been so weak from losing all that weight, that could have been a very different fight. Johnson is 6'2 and between 210 and 215 lbs. to Golota's 6'4 and around 240 lbs. does anyone think he could wrestle Golota and wear him down in 12 rounds or even 15? Does anyone doubt Golota could drop Johnson if Ketchel could? The only edge I see Johnson having is that he was cooler in the ring, but it's been proven that any large fighter that could fight could get to him because he lost the reach advantage he used to hold his opponents' heads back and nail them with the other hand. Anyone who wouldn't give Golota at least a shot is crazy.
