  • Do you guys like Ward's style?

He's a great boxer and person in my eyes. Was doubted through a lot of his career and overcame all that. I understand and respect this. But now let's talk about his style. For those who defend him (I don't want this to turn into a hate thread), is it stylistically pleasing to you or do you just acknowledge the fact that he wins? I personally think he has a great jab and fast right but relies too much on clinching.

I was just asking whether you liked his style or not. Ward's smart enough to win against most everybody but do you like his style?

He has the ugliest style in the sport of boxing.

Grapple, clamp, head butt, hold, elbow, clinch.

He has a smart style, but it's not the most fun to watch. He is very skilled though and he has a patient style. It's. It pretty, but he deserves all the respect for what he has accomplished.

No. I actually think he is capable of more than he does. He does rely too much on clinching and grappling. Other fighters do this of course, but I don't see too many do this as much as he does, excluding Henry Akinwande in his fight with Lennox Lewis. If you haven't seen that, good lord. He makes Ward look like a choir boy. He also received a disqualification as he should have. Good work by Mills Lane. Beyond the clinching, his style focuses on neutralizing his opponent. This is all well and good until you neutralize the fight. Boxing doesn't have to be dramatic every second of a fight, but fans tend to hate this type of style since it features low punch output and action. His hardcore followers seem to enjoy it or they enjoy the fact that he wins at any cost but we see so many complaints about this style. Rigo gets respect but so many people hate his style as well. I don't believe you have to be boring to get a victory and get one without getting beaten up in the process. Chavez, Sr., Duran and many others had exciting styles while still maintaining excellent defense. I don't expect him to fight like them or change his style. And it's not as if Ward doesn't get hit. He took his share of hits against Kovalev and got dropped. Barrera landed on him as well and I recall posters commenting on this and his loyal fans laughing at that like it was absurd that they think Ward never gets hit. At the same time, many of these same posters take a "Safety first" view of boxing and claim a fighter should never get hit if he doesn't have to and that more exciting fighters get hit more often. Yet, Ward's less exciting style still results in him getting hit and making for boring fights. I think the most disturbing aspect to his style is that some fans claim to love it, while apparently watching a fight that most of us don't see, be it through their expertise of the art of boxing or their undying loyalty to the man. In closing, no. I don't like his style.

Hopkins also is a neutralizer, but I'd say that he is actually more fun to watch.
