Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr. Laughs at Canelo's Last Win, Feels He's Overhyped

Former WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) believes his upcoming opponent, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), is overhyped and not deserving of what his handlers are labeling him as - the best fighter in the world. The two Mexican rivals are going to meet on May 6th, Cinco De Mayo weekend, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There's never been a more despised Mexican boxer than Canelo, even among his own.

Well...he's always been a good fighter but has never trained too seriously for the big fights. Looked in great shape in those recent pics, is a big puncher, a naturally bigger fighter, and probably has some greatness in his blood, so I really hope he makes it interesting.

When he dropped his MW Championship belt and gave it to GGG that destroyed his rep
That has to be the biggest joke in boxing for the last decade.

"What do you call it when the assassins accuse... by JuniorMa

If I didn't remember the hype around Jr before Maravilla showed the world he was basically just an ox who was able to drain himself down 2+ weightclasses I might sympathise to a point.

Floyd became an A side guy with a great deal of hater fans if not because of them. Everyone is paying for a ticket regardless if they wanna see you win or lose. And people wanting to see you is what makes you the A side. Its not about people liking you.

So I don't think the "there's never been a more despised Mexican boxer than Canelo" line is all that crazy a line. I'd bet there are more cats paying to see Canelo lose, in particular after he dropped his belt & avoided the GGG fight, than any mainstream Mexican boxer in the last several decades so I tend to agree with that line of thought.

At one point Ali was the most despised boxer in America, so was Mayweather. Things change over time. Borrowing a line from the movie China Town: “’Course I’m respectable. I’m old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.” think the same applies to boxers. Canelo might be revered by future generations of Mexicans if he ends up very rich and continues winning fights. But will they even remember Chavez Jr.?
