It was at Neville Brown's gym in Burton in 1994. Rhodes had some pedigree, beating a couple of very decent amateurs in Junior Witter and Clinton Woods (Witter in final of 1992 Yorkshire ABA's in 132lb div, Woods in final of 1994 Yorkshire ABA's in 165lb div) in recent years and I knew that he'd have the 'Herol Bomber Graham' fighting template with him coming from the Wincobank gym and so I was prepared for a useful fighter. But when I got in the ring with this ****y, blonde-haired kid, he was out of this world. He didn't bother to wear headgear because he said he didn't need it, he didn't. I could barely lay a glove on him. And his punches were more hurtful than any I've ever come across, probably because he tended to push with his punches a lot onto my headgear, but he was a very hard hitter too and his punches came from alsorts of angles that were so difficult to anticipate. He didn't really speak with me much, he just used me as a punching bag I went about four or five rounds with him before I called it to a halt.
Interesting, the fighters from that era and area of England all had the same style of ****yness and awkwardness. As a friend of Naz I know where he got his **** from, and I would love to sparr someone as awkward as him. Recently I have sparred a little kid who is ranked #6 in the amateurs in his weight in this country, and he is the most slippery fighter you will ever come up against. He see's everything and counters everything. At 11 or 12 he can make it all the way if he puts his mind to it I believe.
It's a shame that Rhodes was rushed in to a world title fight so early, and against a full middleweight where Rhodes was more of a blown-up light-middleweight (at the 94 ABA's for example he weighed 156-158 while fighting in the 165lb division, he was almost dead at the weight at 132 against Witter a couple of years earlier but very much 'blown-up' against Woods). He was the youngest British champion since the war (in any division), but should of went the Commonwealth and/or European route first before challenging for the world title.

I agree, who has he been promoted by? I understand its Frank Warren now, but was it ever someone else?
I know that this thread is older but I just saw it.
Guys I sparred with- Tarrick Salmaci. Bronco McCart (these two it was basically on a daily basis) James Toney, Dennis Andries, Gary Stretch, Lonny Beasley, Damian Fuller, Anthony Jones, Leo Nolan, Henry Brent, Marlon Thomas, Kady King, Darrin Morris, and plenty more that I just dont recall right now. The ONLY guy that my trainer would not let me work with was Joseph Kwianauka, that guy was something. He lost to Tate and then just disappeared.
Had sanctioned bouts with- Oba Carr, Jason Pappilion, Sean Daughtery, Cleveland Nelson, Jesse Brisceno, Carl Griffith, Tarrick Salamaci, Corey Johnson. Again there are others that I just dont recall.
Scully would have quite an impressive list I am sure, post it up John Im interested in seeing who we both may have exchanged with. Do you remember the guys that I named?
Rockin'
Oba Carr lost to DLH, when did you fight him Rockin, how long ago, and where at?
Yeah i saw the Rivera fight. Had a real good seat LOL. Cleveland Nelson, I beat him by decision in Toronto in 2001. He was a tough kid, but i was VERY sharp that night. RockN, Email me.. I Want to send you something in email
I've sparred with Paolo Vidoz in Milano, Italy in a basketball court where they setup the ring. I even have a video of it but it's on VCR which is frustrating cuz I've been trying to figure out how to post them on the net.
I am a light heavyweight, and Paolo is a Heavyweight, the thing I've remember the most from Vidoz is how he puts his body weight on you constantly when he corners you, he almost rests on you and boy that wears you down... I've learned that from him, I remember it since I was 19 going on 20 at the time...
