It was a foolish offer and I hope the boxing community doesn't discredit Barrera for this.

Full of Ward fans here defending a blatant duck. Disgusting.
"The purse though".. Not the fact that he kicks his ass and gets 10x the purse in his next fight. Barrera should do the world a favour and hang himself. Pathetic excuse of a man.

So wait Barrera coming off a career best performance was going to get less than 100k to fight Beterbiev? Can't really blame him for backing out. Why is Beterbiev chasing the IBF anyway? He's got the WBC in his own staple just go fight Stevenson already. Al Haymon is playing the same games with Beterbiev as he did with Spence, trying to get them to chase the one belt outside their promotion instead of fights that are easier to make. They wanted Spence to chase a weight drained guy in Brook, they want Beterbiev to fight the Kovalev-Ward winner which is actually a great fight, but the problem is Haymon keeps doing what is best for Haymon, not what is best for his fighters.
Stevenson is the perfect fight for Beterbiev. Get the WBC against an older guy, in Canada, where there is an audience for that fight. Lower risk, higher reward. Instead his career has stalled taking years to chase down a separate belt just because Haymon wants to collect them all.
Anyway, can't blame Duva for getting her fighter a shot at the IBF, but since Beterbiev is in the way, this was not the way to go for Barrera. Duva should have tried to steer him in another direction.
But honestly, if Haymon cared about boxing, he would make Stevenson-Beterbiev. Stevenson-Beterbiev fight on their side, Kovalev-Ward fight on their side, then winners fight. Wtf is wrong with that? Instead Haymon is pulling his usual bull**** and as a result the last two years of BOTH Beterbiev and Stevenson's careers have been a total waste.

25% of the split against a huge name might be accepted, but 25% against a relative unknown? No chance.

Nobody would blame Barrera for turning down a crap offer for a fight he was probably going to lose. But if he didn't like the split, he shouldn't have signed for the fight.
You negotiate before you sign, not after!
Boxing would be totally fucked if more fighters started doing what Barrera seems to have done here .. sign to fight, then pull out a month before the date if you can't get more money than you accepted by signing the contract.
