Comments Thread For: Shakur Stevenson: Mayweather Was All Talk, Never Really An Option!

"Money" talked, but Shakur Stevenson ultimately walked. Stevenson told RingTV.com on Friday that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was "all talk" in his pursuit of signing the Olympic silver medalist to a promotional contract. Mayweather made it seem as though signing Stevenson was a priority because he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August to watch Stevenson fight in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Nice to know! So the kid wanted to sign with Floyd but signing of the contract never materialized.

Hopefully the kid turns out to be great! I'm sure a lot of hate will come his way but in the end he's the one who has to execute the game plan INSIDE the ring.

Not surprised by this comment. Everything Floyd does seems more like he's trying to get attention vs doing anything of real substance. Well outside of his own boxing career where he's known as the hardest training guy in boxing if not all sports & in the ring where all he did was win. I imagine when you talk to a guy like J. Prince or Arum or that guy at Roc Nation talking to Mayweather seems like talking to your 36 year old cousin who's never rapped before talking about making a mixtape or something. Only difference is Floyd is famous & I imagine being around someone that famous can get you seeing things that aren't necessarily there or just wanting to be affiliated with them promotionally to hopefully have some of him rub off on you.

I actually don't think Floyd is cut out for this promotion thing in much the same way as I don't think Oscar is. I think Mayweather Promotions can have success much like GBP has had success, but I think it'll be based upon Floyd being the face of the promotion more than the mind & decision guy of the promotion. And idk if Floyd can take a step back like Oscar seems able to do or not put a Yes Man or puppet like Ellerbe behind the wheel.

Once Shakur signed with J-Prince, there was no chance Mayweather would try to sign him to Mayweather promotions. People who know the history of this sport shouldn't be surprised by this at all. J-Prince is an interesting dude and was at the heart of Ward's contractual issues w/ Goosen and Floyd's issues with Top Rank in the past (see post fight scene in the Corrales fight).

Comparing recent Mayweather Promotions matchups vs. Golden Boy or Top Rank matchups - it's not even close. TBE has given FOTY candidate after FOTY candidate.

The article says that after Floyd heard the asking price, he backed off. Which tells me that the kid wanted too much too soon and wasn't willing to earn it.

Being in Top Rank is a black hole with no interesting fights on the horizon. Ask Bradley.

No, he had no interest in doing business w/ J-Prince (look him up), that guy has been around in the shadows for years.

A lot of talk from this kid but let's see where he idls 5 years from now.
I think Mayweather Promotions made the right decision. I'm not really seeing superstar in him like everyone is. I believe he should have went after Conlan. I'm sure Mayweather Promotions will respond which is what Shakur been wanting. He's been throwing little shots I'm surprised Floyd ain't responded yet.
