I don't actually buy into the idea that Leonard was still the lineal champion, I'm just pointing how based on the same technicalities that favor Canelo being a lineal champion, that Leonard could also.

Leonard/Duran was contracted for SMW, but both men came at the MW limits - Leonard at 160 and Duran at 158. Per Larry, that's still a SMW fight and doesn't count.

Nobody would dispute that Manny was fighting as a WW.
Leonard/Duran fight at 160/158, but that's not a MW fight, lol!

If we're going to care what the contracts say and what titles are on the line, why is it irrelevant that Canelo vacated his actual MW title?

The whole idea you're arguing about some superficial status, but then side stepping around guys who 'actually' fight at the weight is coming off a little subjective.

I can accept this reasoning too.

Some of you say that we should subsume our opinions and just accept whatever "lineal rules" or the Ring -- or the ABCs tell you.

I have a brain and I can process facts just like the Ring, or lineal nerds. Especially when the MW lineage has become a joke, hijacked by Super Jr. MWs.

And for the record, I don't care what belts GGG holds - they mean even less than the Ring or lineal.

Who he's beaten in the division matters. Thus, he IS NOT THE CHAMP at MW, not yet. He hasn't done enough.

March 18, #1 & #2 fight, this will decide THE CHAMP.

            Bingo.

Its not a lineal title fight though. That is still with Canelo. Lineal is not the be all and end all and doesnt always signify the true champion
This. Lineal is only the be all and end all for simple-minded folk, who cant process information independently.

Stevenson is lineal. I believe Linares is lineal too (don't care enough to check). Only simple-minded folks think these dudes are THE CHAMP in their divisions.

There are many variations of the Lineal title. There isn't really a single 'lineal' champion unless its universally recognised across the board.

Just thought i'd throw that into this thread. Give you something to think about..

As far as i know if you are unified champion, that makes you undisputed champion. You can't dispute between the alphabet org's, given we just proved lineal is meaningless.
Forget about GGG for a minute. Let's imagine the situation when in one weightclass Fighter A holds WBA and IBF straps, while Fighter B holds WBC and WBO. Both of them are unified champions, but neither is undisputed. Not sure if such split ever happened in reality, but theoretically possible.

Lineage isn't even worth mentioning in this situation. Too many special privileges given to guys with this "title".
