UFC fighters still make good money, not great, but decent. $50k-100K is decent...frankly it's more than a lot of boxers would dream of making with 15 fights to their name. But those virtual no name fighters don't move the needle in terms of people tuning in. It's like in Hollywood. If Tom Cruise is in a movie, he makes $20m, and the guy who is the store clerk in some random scene makes $250. Because people want to see Tom Cruise, not store clerk. Tom Cruise is a brand, and the value he brings to the movie deserves to be compensated accordingly.
Nate Diaz is a brand. His name on the marquee makes people pay money to watch. He deserves to make money reflective of that fact. As far as I'm aware, McGregor has the biggest guarantee of any fighter - at $3,000,000. His name alone on any card is a sure bet it will do at least 500k to potentially a million buy at $60 a pop. Now the distributor and promotion deserve their cut, I'm not trying to say McGregor should walk with every dime, but to suggest that the McGregor, or the Diaz brand name only brings a value of $3m or less to the product is insulting - and if I was seeing guaranteed amounts of 5x or more that across the street from a boxing promoter - I would poke my head in and see if they were interested.
