The Ring title is not the "lineal" title. There are no official rules for the "lineal" title. Most people with more than 3 active brain cells know that when a fighter vacates his title and moves down to a lower division and wins a title, he is no longer recognized in his previous division.

Canelo is only the lineal heir to Hopkin's reign, but he's never fought or beaten a MW ranked fighter.

People think of 'lineal' and they think there's some storied tradition of the title being passed down from the very first ever champion. That doesn't exist.

Hopkins never defeated another lineal champion, he became the lineal champion by unifying the 4 belts. After Golovkin beats Jacobs in March and Saunders in June, he'll have done the exact same thing, and so no matter how badly that upset GGG haters, a new lineage will have been created (just like a new lineage was created when Hopkins unified).

Its like when Floyd beat Cotto and didn't defend it for years. He was still the lineal champ.
cotto was lineal when he fought Floyd??

I know. that is why the lineal title is garbage if you can never be stripped, what's the point in being the "man" if you aren't defending that title against other top fighters.

My bad got it mixed up. Floyd was lineal for 2 years though without fighting anyone at 154 from 2013-2015.

Tin Foil Terry bringing some truth. When he's not obsessing over conspiracy theories, he's a pretty logical guy.

In an era of four recognized governing bodies, tracking lineage can be helpful for determining which of the four champions deserves recognition as the true king of the division.

But when a guy doesn't hold an official title and hides behind the mythical "lineal title" to avoid top contenders, the lineal title loses its meaning.

Catch weights in world championship fights are ridiculous and shouldn't be recognized. The Cotto/Canelo lineage is bogus as neither was willing to actually sign for 160 pound weight limit fights.

The vacancy left by the retirement of Martinez was logically filled once GGG unified the WBC/WBA/IBF titles. Canelo's "lineal" claim is ludicrous at this point.

most lineal defenders are also fanboys of fighters who duck so they just think it soudns cool saying my fav fighter is lineal! as if that means anything when they are ducking and dodging left and right. floyd was lineal champ while he ducked mar, and then cotto, and then when he was ducking pac for all those years but what did that prove?
