    Golovkin/Jacobs for the lineal title?

With Canelo about to fight outside the division for a second time (moving up to Super Caneloweight), most places are likely going to stop recognising his 'lineal' claim.

With a vacant title, Golovkin-Jacobs would effectively be No.1 vs No.2, making the winner the new 'Lineal Champion'. More importantly though, the Lineal title will actually reflect the No.1 fighter, which isn't always the case.

I personally don't care much for lineage, but I know a lot of you do. I see it as one more step towards completely unifying and then hopefully moving up. What are your thoughts?

Ring should probs strip canelo as his left the division and going by their rules and rankings the belt is awarded to the winner of the #1 and #2 fight.

Championship vacancies can be filled in the following two ways:
        1. THE RING’s Nos. 1 and 2 contenders fight one another.
        2. If the Nos. 1 and 2 contenders chose not to fight one another and either of them fights No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5, the winner may be awarded THE RING belt if the Editorial Board deems the contenders worthy. Here are the seven situations in which a champion can lose his belt:
        • The Champion loses a fight in the weight class in which he is champion.
        • The Champion moves to another weight class.
        • The Champion does not schedule a fight in any weight class for 18 months.
        • The Champion does not schedule a fight at his championship weight for 18 months (even if he fights at another weight).
        • The Champion does not schedule a fight with a Top-5 contender from any weight class for two years.
        • The Champion retires.
        • The Champion tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
It's bull****, but Canelo has til the end of 2017 to fight at 160 to retain his 'RING' MW title.

Lineal titles are bs anyways. Monzon retired with his version of the lineal title (3 other lineal champions retired with it before him), then when Leonard beat Hagler, he left the division.

Hopkins became the next lineal champion by unifying the 4 belts, but that's not the definition of lineal, that's the definition of undisputed. You become the top champ of a division by clearing it out, or winning all the belts. This whole concept of lineal has been bastardized and subjective.

Essentially it's giving Canelo credit from Hopkins' accomplishments. Otherwise his stake as MW champ is based on beating a JMW at 155lbs......

I agree that the lineal concept has been abused but new lineages have always been a part of the championship picture so thats an irrelevant argument. The reality is, in the modern era of so many belts, the top champ should be the guy with the majority of the 4 main belts.

Canelo beat the MW champion, he's the MW champion until he gets beaten. That's how it's always been, the rules don't change for Golovkin.

The top champ is the guy that beat the top champ, that beat the top champ......... and so on. That's lineal, that's Canelo.

Having more titles doesn't make you the top champ, you can just be given them. You don't get given lineal.

No he gave up the WBC title. He's still the lineal champ. There's no org that can strip that.

No. Canelo still holds the lineage at 160 because he hasn't lost, retired or permanently left the division.

The "lineal" champion is a cool little history tidbit but it's meaningless in today's boxing landscape which is about cherry picking the biggest cash grab with the least amount of risk at the moment.
