Yes, Dempsey would be small for a cruiser these days!

I would also use the word IGNORANT carefully if i were you because im not the one that actually needs proof or some weird rationaliztion as to why Dempsey would not remotely be favored over fighters like them !

Im obviously talking with someone who creeped out of a nostalgic history section so its a waste of time debating anything rational with you ....have a good one !
All you've done is ignorantly trawled through BoxRec to find the likes of Meehan, that means nothing.

You haven't even read my posts properly.

My only argument is that Dempsey would have a good chance of beating SOME modern HW's, and that it's not a given that he would lose to everyone, just because they are bigger.

It's pointless taking this any further.

I'll see you on another thread at some point.

He'd be a CW but he wouldn't be classed as small.

He was bigger than Lebedev and about the same size as the likes of Huck and Gassiev, etc.

The late Bert Randolph Sugar stated he treated all heavyweights as the same size and regarded Dempsey as the best ever because of it.

But only a fool would think a prime 185 to 190 pound guy could hold the jock strap of Wlad, Lewis, Vitali, Bowe or any other super sized modern boxers. I guess Dempsey could have taken steroids and did what Jones did to a John Ruiz or Maskaev but that's about it.

Back in those days fighters diets were weird by today's standards. He might have been on a bread and water diet to make weight. I recall even in the 50's Rocky Marciano didn't eat meat in camp. Marciano was a naturally much bigger man than his fighting weight but ate a diet similar to a middleweight boxer making weight.

Once again: The right blend of skills and style, can overcome even huge disparities in size.

Dempsey may not have been able to have beaten the big guys. You may be right. We'll never know. But it's ignorant to rule it out completeley.

Being smaller can sometimes work to your advantage.

His speed, style and power, could have gotten him inside to do a lot of damage.

In terms of height and reach, guys like Corrie Sanders and Ray Mercer were of equal size. They were heavier, but they had more body fat. If they'd have been leaner with less body fat, they wouldn't have been that much heavier. You saw what happened. Sanders went through Wlad, and many people think that Mercer beat Lennox. Time and again, Mike Tyson proved that the perfect blend can get the job done.
