Has the PBC experiment failed?

The actual "Brand" isn't going anywhere, but "Major" fights on the Networks isn't going to be taking place more so than them landing on Showtime. They had a budget for as long as they could run w/ it but the well ran dry hence the slew of fights announced ALL landing on Showtime with Danny vs Thurman likely landing on CBS (Showtime's parent company). We're still gonna get main guys fighting cans (ala Wilder's next fight on FOX) but most of the marquee fights for financial reasons will land on Showtime but will still have the "PBC" brand.

That's about right. Main difference is Haymon no longer has the sole control over the fights getting made and Showtime still has to deliver the seal of approval. Not to mention Showtime don't have huge budget to accommodate all these PBC fighters and give them the dates they need. PBC still needs to acquire them from other networks. But where will the money come from?

has lost close to 500 million from what ive read, luckily hes made his fortunes from other avenues so he can afford the loss. Yep, smart men can make mistakes though. Haymon believed he could continually spoon feed the public garbage because he had the US monopoly on boxing, he didnt consider the UFC as a serious alternative. Haymons had a very arrogant approach to his PBC show, seems to think the shows sell themselves, doesnt properly promote them either, he hasnt built any stars and the main one hes got coming through (errol spence) wants out, hes had enough of it, and hes not the only one.

You have no idea how much he has been spent and neither does anybody writing whatever you read (assuming you even understood what you read).

He's closer to a monopoly than he's ever been. So if his strategy is so poor, why is it working so well?

It hasn't failed but it is failing.

This year was abysmal for them, so many fights fell through, primarily Jack v DeGale. Its good that in the first three months we're getting more relevant fights from them but from what I assume is their biggest perspective, they have not created a single star. What is it now, 2 and a half years?

The theory was good. Bring boxing back to the mainstream, by showing world level boxing for free on TV. What was not to like? However, the execution has been flawed.

Rather than delivering consistent, competitive match ups, the PBC has become the butt of many jokes in boxing. PBC unfortunately has been associated with mismatches for its most protected fighters, with wilder v wawryzk and lara v foreman upcoming examples of this. The occasional competitive fight on paper has become the exception, not the rule.

Haymons control of US boxing has coincided with the exponential increase in popularity of the UFC, whilst viewing figures for boxing gets lower by the day. Although he is not the only major promoter at fault, haymon must take a large portion of the blame for the transition of boxing into a niche sport.

2016 was a disastrous year for haymon and the PBC, with dwindling figures as a result of one sided match ups. Much of the reported $500 million investment has been thrown away, and the purses for PBC fighters are now decreasing as the money is drying out.

With rumours that his flagship fighter errol spence is looking to leave, and james degale potentially off after the jack fight, its looking as if the foundations of PBC may be beginning to crack and it would be a surprise to see the organisation continuing past 2017.

So what are peoples thoughts on PBC? Has it been a positive influence on the sport, and has its mission objective been completed- to bring boxing back to the levels of mainstream popularity it once held?

does haymon have more power and control now than he did two years ago? yes.

does haymon have more world champions than he had two years ago? yes.

is showtime more committed to boxing than they were two years ago? yes.

is showtime more committed to haymon than they were two years ago? yes.


is HBO's budget smaller than it was two years ago? yes.

are top rank, golden boy, K2, main events & roc nation forced to split that evaporating HBO pie with nowhere else to go? yes.


all you trolls keep crying month after month, year after year that PBC is failing, yet haymon's power continues to grow while HBO's power continues to shrink.

all you trolls keep inventing rumors about fighters leaving haymon, yet he has more world champions than ever before and dozens of prospects climbing up the rankings.

PBC will be destined to fail until it can keep its fighters active. Thurman-Garcia winner has no excuse, after a win like that they have to stay active with top boxers.
