Clearly this is a money grab fight with lil risk for Oscar & Canelo. And notice I use Oscar's name & not just Canelo cuz nowadays boxing is more of a business than a sport at the elite level in many ways. I think Canelo would fight anyone, but he's entrusting Oscar (as most fighters do with their promoter &/or manager) to guild his career to its maximum upside for both parties.

There are very few guys thinking legacy or fighting the best available guy these days in the boxing business. Many cats love to criticize the fighter over this stuff, but I believe its finally a reality that treating boxing like a business has trickled down to the fighter who is now thinking more like the promoter, the alphabet groups & the networks have done for decades. And nothing is changing until the structure of the sport is changed to a more fan friendly model like most sports have undertaken with all the best athletes of said sport under one umbrella making an elite league where all the best boxers can fight each other at any time without so many people needing to agree to make it happen.

I have no problem with GBP targeting a certain demographic BUT again GBP isnt doing boxing or its stable any favors with purposed fights like Canelo vs Chavez Jr. #patheticfight.

        Thoughts?
How many fighters under the Golden Boy banner are not Mexican or Mexican American?

maybe but i think people are under appreciating just how big a fight canelo chavez actually is and liking ggg is blinding people to that. its actually a bigger fight then ggg canelo so while i get what ur saying that fight in particular is as big a fight as boxing has right now regardless how chavez has struggles in recent years. the fight is gigantic and i for one hope it happens

Not sure how he's taking advantage of them if that's what they want to see and it would do huge numbers. Just meeting demand.

Most mexican boxing fans are casual viewers just like everyone else.

JoJo biggest fight to date was against a puerto rican (Velez) so was Ronnie by the way. JoJo has a tune up showcase fight this weekend and next title a shot against Gary Russell (not mexican). that's the belt they are targeting him for a mandatory he is currently #3 ranked WBC for Russell's belt. Just confused on the point you trying to make.
IDK man this is my thing. I understand your counter point about them fighting Velez BUT what you are saying about JoJo kinda proves my point. How the heck does fighting Horacio Garcia prepare a young fighter for the speed of Gary Russel? You mean to tell me there isnt a showcase tune-up type opponent against an AA, African, or Cuban thatll prepare him for speed? Gary Russel probably has one of the fastest hands in boxing if not the fastest. I just think Golden Boy is selling his guys short career wise putting them in with this level or style of opponent. To be elite you have to be able to adapt to all styles. As for a guy like Chavez Jr. he in no way prepares canelo for GGG, big fight, big $$$, but lets see how much $$$ Canelo and GBP makes if GGG mangles Canelo. Give a guy a fish he eats for a day, teach a guy to fish he eats for life.

Taking advantage of the Mexican boxing community? Not really it's a fight that many Mexicans wanted to see

To be fair, Canelo vs Junior has always been something both parties were leaning towards, but Junior was so undisciplined with his weight that the reality of a fight materializing between the two started to wane. But now that Junior found the motivation again, their destined fight is gaining steam again. This was a long time coming so it's natural for it to happen when all things were in the right place again.

Yeah, Golovkin is under a lot of pressure and the clock is ticking on Canelo's offer. Only 11 months to go now ...
