"Andre Ward gonna put half this forum on suicide watch when he wins more convincingly against Kovalev the next time around. "
Nah man, Half this forum just like to see fairness in a sport that they are fans of. A sport that will not even be supported in 15 years due to outcomes like ward-kov combined with the UFC.
Those people didn't care if it was Ward. They aren't following him. They wanted to see the fight of the year. The PPV numbers show the fact that few casuals cared about either.
Ward has consistently been bashed on by casual fans who don't get technique and think he just holds. Mayweather got a causal fanbase interested in him because he brought drama. Ward doesn't have that. Look at the people here who bash Ward, they're pretty consistently people who know little about technique and have a predictable list of favorite fighters. I call that "casual".
People who are interested in the science generally have a respect for Ward. Even if they're not fans (of which there are actually pretty few) they don't go around bashing him.
If you honestly think that the vast majority of folks, here and in other places, bashing on Andre Ward aren't the same folks who are going to be around to talk about the coming Russell-Escandon fight or will be *****ing about the record of the guy who ends up fight Artur Beterbiev in his tickover fight, you're fooling yourself.
There's nothing "casual" about any of that, whether they aren't knowledgeable to talk boxing technique or not.
Floyd's PPV audience was largely compromised of folks who saw him elsewhere (WWE, DWTS), tuned in during the initial 24/7 run and subsequent 24/7 editions (and were drawn by the spectacle), or caught something that Floyd said in an interview somewhere, with the rest having seen him fight or tuning in for having seen his opponent fight.
Heres another point that should be made: People often call Ward a primadonna because he fights in Oakland. Well...Oakland is a stone's throw from Vegas where how many fighters fight out of? If you were going to Vegas and went to Oakland instead the flight would take you about 2 yours out of the way lol.
Vegas has money to spare, Oakland is bifurcated into the haves and have nots, and the have nots are beaten down, homicide laden...Its nice to have an athlete like Ward represent! And again, its not like Ward chooses to fight in an island off the coast of New Zealand, Oakland has a major airport and easy service from Vegas...nobody going to a fight in Vegas would be put out jumping a short flight to Oakland, even from a Casino.
So its lame to yell at Ward for fighting out of Oakland. Its actually a nice gesture and not a big deal considering the proximity.
... Oakland is a nearly 600 mile drive away from Las Vegas; yes, there is an airport there, but that's still a nearly 90minute flight if you catch a non-stop.
