Comments Thread For: Tszyu: Kovalev Must Stop Blaming Others, Fix His Mistakes

The only thing Kovalev really needs to fix is his stamina. I'm not sure how fixable it is, but if he finishes stronger, there's no way Ward can win enough rounds. It's a pattern of his at this point that he can't maintain the same sharpness throughout a 12 round fight.

Pretty disappointing from Tszyu... his first loss against Phillips was different, he got battered!
Apart from knock Ward out, Kovalev couldn't do much there than to win as convincingly as he did, you aren't going to win all 12 rounds, but he won the fight easily and comfortably...without a shadow of a doubt.
Kovalev having to knock out Ward in a rematch is a bad way to start a fight, so I just see Kovalev doing this rematch as a formality to make money and to let HBO create this fake Ward machine.
Boxing just keeps losing points bad!

that's a bit harsh, all fighters tire, or start slow then finish hard, seeing fights are scored by rounds, it's kinda irrelevant if you 'come on strong (wank wank ward)' or start strong..
technically as a champion, all you need to do is win 6 rounds and you keep your title.
the reality seems to be that if fighters like Kovalev or Klitshcko, etc, were not KTFO'ing people, then it would appear the fight is competitive, but reality is majority times its not and we shouldn't be harsh on them.
I doubted Kovalev's boxing ability (non KO style) up until he fought B-Hop, when he outboxed B-Hop that's when I said "WOW" this guy can box, and then on the weekend when he even outboxed Ward the whole fight and even inside fighting, I once again said "WOW"...
Very very skilled fighter with so many facets, and yes agree if he had even better stamina we would see a near perfect machine.

havent rewatched the entire fight, but kova did seem to headhunt after the knockdown.
also didnt jab or double jab enough, the jab kept ward occupied and tentative especially after he got knocked down tryin to counter kovas jab
jacksons corner work was terrible. not near enough urgency at all.
in regards to kovas stamina- he threw and landed considerably more punches in 2nd half of the fight compared to 1st half of the fight.

Kovalev has more than stamina issues. The way he attacks leaves himself vulnerable to a variety of counters. Other than putting Ward in a headlock his inside game was weak. He spent too much time fighting Wards' kind of fight rather than what made him successful initially. He made little effort to protect his body. I think the criticism from Tszyu was fair. He could have done more to build on his lead but he was unprepared for Ward hanging in there and making it a real fight. When you're so use to dominating lesser opponents you don't work on taking your game to the next level and that's what Kovalev needs to do.Last edited by HarvardBlue; 11-24-2016, 07:08 AM.
