Comments Thread For: Ward: I'd Win Rematch Easier; What Can Kovalev Do Differently?

LAS VEGAS Andre Ward talked Saturday night as if he isn't contractually obligated to fight Sergey Kovalev again. His handlers preferred to discuss Ward's win, not a rematch, in the aftermath of the most significant victory of Ward's career. Kathy Duva, Kovalev's promoter, made it perfectly clear, though, that Kovalev will exercise his contractual right to an immediate rematch, assuming Kovalev's sore right hand doesn't require surgery or a long layoff to rest it.

Ward i honestly think you have more adjustments to make then Kovalev..good win but you have to be a lot better in the rematch

think kovalev comes out way too aggressively in the rematch and gets picked apart coming on the inside. but cant wait. let ward solidify it in the rematch and leave the haters crying more.

Kovalev needs to make one adjustment and that's to not try to prove a point and outwrestle ward.

There were times when they clinched and Kov pushed him away or waited to byrd to break them up. That's what he should have been doing more, break off quicker instead of wrestling with ward.

Ward nothing when the fight was fought outside. Kov's length and power dominated. I think Ward will have to make a bigger adjustment in the rematch and that's by having a plan to get inside without getting caught.

Ward's lack of a right hand showed up, he didn't land a single solid right hand to the head.

Kovalev said in the post fight interview that he wanted to show he could outbox him and was basically saying he is going to turn it up a notch in the rematch, and honestly we have no reason to believe he's lying about that until that fight happens.

I can't wait. Ward did great in the first fight adjusting after the beating he was taking early but I don't think he edged it, but I think a rematch will settle this. We need twelve more rounds to decide who is truly the better fighter.

Idk man. Ward needs to get inside to win. Getting inside is hard work and will give Kovalev numerous opportunities to land his right hand. I think Ward is the one that needs to adjust to Kovalev more so than the other way around.

Ward can use his feints to get him to commit and time him on his way in. If Kovalev comes in more aggressive it can create more opportunities for Ward. But Kovalev showed he can stay disciplined for 12 rounds so I don't see why he would change anything. Just stay patient and capitalize of Wards mistakes.

So much to look forward to. I can't wait!!!

while i had ward winning most rounds he didnt win them easily by no stretch. imho they weren't the type of rounds you can beat a champion with. he was the champ to get the belts i feel he should of been more dominant. kovalev deserved more respect as a champion. if this was just 2 top contenders i can see him winning but this was a championship fight. he didnt win decisively he struggled hard

the better fighter will make the better adjustments.....
..... and the better fighter, is Andre Ward !

Ward needed 12 hard rounds under his belt, he will be much better next up..... and now he knows Kovalev, now there are no surprises

Ward will start round 13 where he left off round 12

Personally, I agree, but also think it's a reason why he will do even better in a rematch. He had a disastrous start but was able to go on to out-box Kovalev, even after the haze of being dropped. If he can adjust in the fight to come back from that and look even stronger in the 2nd half, I fully believe he can adjust exponentially with some time to ponder and plan.

Kovalev looked brilliant in the start but I do wonder what he can do to keep that from happening again. What if he doesn't get a KD next time? Then he's just out-boxed for most of the fight.

His main problem came from his hands slowing in the 2nd half, IMO. Once that happened, he wasn't going to drop Andre again. I don't know that he can fix that unless he can shut down Ward's ability to strike his body.
Also, if they get a ref that lets Ward grapple like he has in the past, Kovalev is fuqed.
