Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward - Official PPV Discussion

I've just re-watched the fight, and I think scores of 114-113 or 115-112 in favor of Kovalev are probably the most accurate. No way Ward won 114-113. How could anyone POSSIBLY say he won 7+ of those rounds? There's just NO WAY. And I wanted Ward to win! But Sergey clearly got jobbed out here. Another black eye for boxing.

Notice how they bring up scorecards and punch stats to justify their *****ing. Yet when Márquez got robbed by Pacquiao in a VERY SIMILAR close fight, there were no complaints.

Exactly! Let me break this down: you have scorecards and stats to justify one claim, and 'racism' and 'yeah well there have been worse verdicts' for the other.



I mean, this was not an outrageous 'robbery' - just a close fight with a very obvious hometown decision.

I hope everyone can agree on two points:

1. Most ppl (experts, commentators, etc.) saw Kovalev win that fight. This can actually be established as an objective, empirical fact and not just an opinion.

2. No way this bout would be scored this way anywhere outside the US.

Well, on the plus side 1hourrun never gets to claim robberies only happen in Europe again. Ever.

Just watched the fight and couldn't give Ward more than 5 rounds, and that's including giving him the absolute non-event of the first. Close fight? Definitely. Intriguing fight? Just about. Ward win? Do me a f***ing favour.

Let me start by saying I had Kovalev winning 114-113, with the knockdown being the determining factor. I just cannot see 7 rounds or more going to Ward. Overall great fight and I'll be looking forward to the rematch. I think Ward will start off faster and do even better in the rematch, as he showed down the stretch that he was slowly but surely figuring Kovalev out and getting his timing down. But no doubt Kovalev will make adjustments of his own as well. These two warriors proved to us last night that they are indeed two of the top fighters in the world.

I thought Kovalev won it, but I think we can all agree it was a surprisingly good and exciting fight.

At the time of watching it live I felt Ward had just snuck it by maybe a point, two points at most, it felt at the time like he managed to take over in the second half...Basically gut instinct was that Ward had won an extremely close one...

But I watched it again yesterday and had it for Kovalev. I actually scored it that time and had Sergey winning, again, extremely close...I cant see for the life of me how guys have it for Sergey with scores like 117 etc...It was a closer fight than that for sure regardless of who you thought won.

So yeah, count me in as someone who thinks Kovalev should still have his belts...Just...

Hopefully their rematch gives us a better insight between who is truly the better of these two fighters. Controversy to one side, its been a while since we had a fight that split fans like this one and had us talking.

It's time for boxing fans to move on. The fight is over. It was hanging in the balances and Andre Ward miraculously won a very close come from behind, may I say a bit somewhat controversial decision, which could have gone either way..

He won because he wanted it more. After getting buzzed and dropped in the earlier rounds, he bit down and ground it out and showed the resolve, grit, determination and heart of a true champion.

Kovalev, whom I predicted to win by way of KO before the fight blew it. He fought Andre's kind of a fight by slowing down the pace, in a futile attempt to out box him, which was a costly error on his part. because it gave Andre a renewed sense of confidence by allowing him to find his rhythm and back into the fight.

The Krusher punches like a mule, which was evidenced by the first two rounds. Had he fought at a much busier pace he would have gotten the TKO stoppage. Walking a man down and backing him up is not enough if you don't put enough punches together, which was something he failed to do.

Contrary to popular opinion, Kovalev didn't dominate or beat Ward up after the first two rounds. After that, the fight became a virtual stalemate, without either guy giving an inch that could have gone either way.

Could have gone either way. A draw would've been fine IMO. I'm also OK with scoring it 1 point for either guy.

Everyone who is remotely intelligent had that fight scored for Kovalev. Mario Lopez just said that on the 3 Knockdown Rule and said thats what Oscar De La Hoya, Al Bernstein and all the other guys who are totally unbiased on this fight said.
