Does boxing need more fighters like Sergey Kovalev or like Andre Ward?

I predicted Ward to put on a masterful performance and eclipse Kovalev but the opposite was true!
Kovalev is elite, a guy with KO power, with one of the best jabs in the sports, smart, and can box with the best at the highest level!
I commend SOG for taking the fight and also Kov as well testing himself against one of the best!
Hope they do it again, boxing needs them!

A combination. Ward for his defense (but not for his wrestling and holding), and Kovalev for his ability to mess people up with his fists.

Do we need more fighters that clean out their division then move up and fight the best in that division? AbsolutelyLast edited by Holystroke3; 01-17-2017, 06:50 PM.

To fight often and stay in fans mind.
In fact I think boxing would benefit from fighters receiving yearly salary contracts rather than
A per fight salary.

Maybe I didn't express it correctly. I believe if fighters on PBC, top rank and GBP received yearly salaries like in other sports, or a certain guarantee per fight, then you'd spend far less time negotiating individual fights. Since fighters are already receiving a guarantee the negotiations would focus on other items rather than money.
Sort of the how mayweather had a guaranteed contract with showtime.
With that guarantee we saw mayweather fight in far more fights than we would have without that guarantee.Last edited by JJRod; 01-17-2017, 07:57 PM.

Boxers' popularity is too volatile for that. Showtime bet on Mayweather-Pacquiao being one of those six fights and it paid off. Having guarantees for the year set ahead of time is too risky for both the network and the fighter. Honestly I think that could lead to more contract disputes and less activity or more soft touches to start every year then a big fight to end to try to boost your stock before negotiations for next year
