But the fact he is a unified champion and has been exciting, knocking out and dominating top opponents in his weight class is precisely why this is a big fight.

What? Why even bring up Golovkin? Do you suddenly think boxers get paid by how many belts they have? Of course not, it's never worked that way ever unless there is a purse bid. Boxing has always worked by splitting the pot based on popularity and various other factors. Oscar de la Hoya, after getting KOd by Hopkins, made over $10 million fighting Mayorga, a champion, who made far less. Why? Because Oscar was a huge star, obviously.

Golovkin is viewed as a more lucrative fighter than Kovalev, he's simply the bigger boxing star. Because of that, he typically makes a little bit more money than Kovalev, but neither are massive names since they are not from America.

You also clearly got it backwards - guys are demanding outrageous purses to fight Golovkin. Guys like Jacobs demand over $5 million to even step foot in the ring with him, or Billy Joe Saunders want over $4 million, which is clearly pricing themselves out. And even guys like Canelo who doesn't even want to have a percentage split and demands a flat fee! Of course you're a very biased poster so you like to make up things and blame Golovkin for guys literally ducking him, like Canelo dropping his title so he NOT fight Golovkin, yet you ignore that completely and say Golovkin should except a no-split/flat fee deal, while also ignoring Canelo isn't even interested in fighting until late 2017 at the earliest.
    Kov is happy with 2m
gg should accept 10m to fight Canelo

Idk, tough call, I'd probably be a bit upset with Duva if I knew Ward was getting so much more money. But like you said, could be upside as well. Personally, I'd like to see fights like this where the winner gets a bonus. Make it $4 for Ward, $2m for Kovalev, winner gets the extra million (and they can split whatever upside there is, if any).
I don't think his purse has anything to do with Wards. Each promoter gets a percentage of the revenue, and it's not 5/2, Main Events gets at least half. One promoter is willing to lose millions (see Cotto), other isnt cause they can't afford it.

Canelo Ggg sells at least 5x ppvs, could be a lot more. And Kovalev isn't taking a flat fee, he gets 50%+ in upside

I'm hearing others saying Kovalev is getting much more than $2 million so it seems likely my su****ion this $2m talk isn't accurate. Doesn't make much sense for Kovalev to drop from $3.5m to $2m in a far bigger and significant fight.
50% upside but at what number? Who knows if this fight will even do good enough to make more upside

I'd guess he gets upside north of 150k buys, and Ward starts seeing upside at 300k+.

                  It's outrageous that Sergey's purse isn't bigger.

I feel like a 2m gtd is a good solid gtd, and what I would expect for this fight. I wonder how long roc nation is going to be in boxing... Not very much longer with these kind of deals.
