A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, as the saying goes; rather than lock in the Ward fight on a 50/50 share, K2 gambled on the chance of fighting Cotto/Alvarez (on a share far less than 50/50) and came up empty.
Well. Yes. They came up empty - or nearly empty, at least they got the trinket out of the whole sorry mess. So. They rolled the dice and ****ed up. It happens. It still doesn't make it an irrational decision to have made.

Anyway. Regardless - my initial reply was to someone who was claiming that Wards offer did not impact on other fights that Golovkin might have planned which was incorrect. That's all I was saying.

Should Golovkin have fought Ward? Well, from a fan perspective absolutely, but I'm sure that you, like the majority of posters recognise that Golovkin would probably lose both his '0' and the aura of invincibility which is his main selling point. Furthermore he probably wouldn't even get paid that much for it - certainly less than the reported '8 figure sum' mooted for Canelo. Cowardly? Sure if you like, but I don't crap on other fighters for making 'sound business decisions' so I see no reason to do so to Golovkin.

What is stopping them from taking that offer and signing it?

With Golden Boy saying what their offer was, and K2 going to pains to acknowledge that Golden Boy actually did make the offer, you are talking about a package worth at least $10m (5 times the amount of money that Golovkin was disclosed to have gotten for the Lemieux fight, his highest disclosed purse ever) as being unfair.

Let that sink in; an offer worth 5 times your highest disclosed purse was so "unfair" that it didn't even merit a response. lol

Golovkin seems to want to be paid as if he does massive business when that's not the case.

        • I don't see why this fight can't happen in May.

Is Canelo's really hand ****ed up or are they using that as an excuse "to have a tune up in May first" then we'll fight GGG? While hoping GGG ages between now and next September.

Beyond that, I never said Jacobs-Quillin had adequate sponsorship; I was simply making the point that, while Golovkin-Lemieux relied on PPV, Jacobs-Quillin was largely financed by a license fee that covered nearly 4 hours of time for Showtime.

The numbers to consider are significantly different between the two events.
Golovkin-Lemieux met or exceeded every benchmark of success which was set going into the event, HBO Sports vice president Mark Taffet told Yahoo Sports. The PPV buys solidly met expectations
Taffet told Yahoo Sports prior to the fight that he urged Loeffler to budget his pay-per-view with 150,000 in mind.
If he told GGG's people to budget with 150k buys in mind then he says that it met or exceeded expectations then what do you think that means? Surely I don't have to explain this to you do I?

Or let me guess, they're all lying trying to save face?

If Canelo had made that offer when he was still WBC champ, GGG would have bitten his hand off. But things have changed now. Canelo isn't the champion any more, Golovkin is, and he probably already made 3x what he was paid for Lemieux against Brook.

The fight isn't going down for another year, and the money is still being negotiated. Let's be honest, if GGG was paid fairly for it he would be getting more than Canelo, but we all know that isn't going to happen.

It wouldn't have been happening in May even if Canelo hadn't been injured.
Oscar was saying Sept 2017 even before the injury. And yes, the reason for the delay is to allow GGG to get another year older.

Yup but I was just saying that gives them another excuse to hold the fight till September.

And Im sure even the Canelo fanbase would agree with the bold.

Dude, it was the Diva who dropped the belt. Nothing else to say.
Now ODH and the diva want to spin things around because they are loosing the media war and they FU.

Canelo does call the shots in any GGG fight. GGG has little appeal in America. Canelo has the burros and taco crowd.
