The writer has just prescribed suicide here. What Brook needs to do is run.
Comments Thread For: Brook should emulate Duran, not Leonard to upset Golovkin

Thing is, this will help him survive, not win. Duran survived against hagler, albeit with different tactics.Comment

Worst advice ever. Brook does not fight on the inside. If he could not handle porter on the inside and had to hold. Why would he be able fight on the inside with ggg. Sounds like a dangerous suggestion. Either way lets get it on!Comment

That is not a very sound strategy. For one, Brook has never been regarded as a huge puncher at welterweight as opposed to Roberto Duran; Who was regarded as such as a lightweight and brought that punch with him to welterweight in order to buzz and defeat Sugar Ray Leonard.
Secondly, Leonard never possessed the kind of punching power at 147 as Golovkin does at 160. Yes, while being the naturally broader and wider man against Roberto Duran; However he was not the bigger puncher of the two. The smaller Robert Duran was. Leonard was always regarded as a boxer/puncher who typically scored stoppages with combination punches.
If Kell does decide to implement the Duran strategy against GGG, it could very well backfire against him, as he is not the bigger p4p puncher of the two, but Golovkin is. This could play more into his detriment rather than his overall benefit.Comment

Duran was 71-1 when he fought Leonard, Brook has 1 good win on his resume. Also Duran was a very good inside fighter, which is a lost art in boxing these days.
Brook will fight the way he always fights and hope his superior conditioning will tire Golovkin and break him down.
The question is can Brook discourage Golovkin from coming forward and applying constant pressure? Also we know Golovkin can take the punch of a MW but but Kell's chin is untested when hit by 160 pounder (probably around 170 by fight nite).Comment

Duran was a Pitbull and a skillful boxer, Brook is an excellent boxer but he is not even close in a dream to a young Duran to fight his style.
I am leaning towards Brook for the win, only if he brings the best condition for 12 rounds. This should be a Hopkins style vs Trinidad. Grab, punch, jab, get away. If Brook engages toe to toe with Glolovkin, he has no chance.
Glolovkin gets hit easy, Brook should follow his heart, his confidence on his style and I hope he has watched some Hopkins' videos and he could be the winner tonight.
It is imperative to also keep a close eye in the hands wrapping on Golovkin, I have always being su****ious of them...Last edited by zzat; 09-10-2016, 08:55 AM.Comment

This writer is totally off-base. The only chance Brook has is to be the same Brook who beat Porter. He has to hit and clinch and make it an ugly, boring fight. Brook doesn't have the boxing ability of a Pacquiao who was able to box circles around De La Hoya and pepper him with lightning shots. At least, I haven't seen Brook show that type of ability.
Brook needs to keep moving, but his best defense is clinching when GGG gets close. Stay on the outside and use his jab and hit and clinch. GGG gets close: hit and clinch, repeat.
This writer thinks Brook is somehow going to make this fight Castillo-Corrales, pretty silly proposition and non-beneficial to Brook. I'm sure this writer isn't giving Mayweather or Ward that kind of advice.Comment

P.S.
The writer suggests a toe to toe war and then says that GGG has deadly punching power in the next sentence. I think the writer tried to write something "different" here, but that shouldn't be a writer's goal. Write the educated article and if it happens to be different than let it be, but trying to be different for the sake of writing some off-the-wall article fails on every level.
I read the article thinking GGG was Mayweather with Tyson power and Brook was Ricky Hatton.Last edited by MisanthropicNY; 09-10-2016, 11:32 AM.Comment
