You are getting your timing really mixed up. HBO PPV were involved in airing Ali v Frazier III all the way back in 1975 and Leonards first truly big box office event, against Duran, was also on PPV.
PPV however was not a commonly used term and could only be offered across particular territories and short circuit was still somewhat in use. However PPV was around for Leonard/Hearns and much later in it's full, modern incarnation, with Leonard/Hagler.
Then we have Tyson who brought PPV numbers to a whole new level.
Modern ATGs, which we may regards as the last 35 years or so, have been involved in the PPV era.
