on that note, where does Golovkin's title defense run even begin? He won the interim WBA belt when it was vacant, got handed the WBA regular belt, and was then handed the WBA "super" championship in 2014

The WBA stated that, toward consolidating its champions, it would mandate a Golovkin-Jacobs fight to declare a single MW belt holder... if the Golovkin-Alvarez fight could not be made for September.

So, despite the Canelo duck, we now have a Jacobs-Mora rematch and crickets from WBA. Pathetic.

Erislandy Lara is the top dog at 154lbs; if the Golovkin fight, which would be massive for him, doesn't present itself, why would he leave 154, where he's already on top and there's action for him at least 5-6 fighters deep?

hilarious to see the fear in people's hearts on here.

Golovkin kept the Alvarez talks going well past everyone seemed to sense that the fight wasn't happening and well into June (to only get some nonsense about a verbal agreement, from a guy who has already shown that verbal agreements don't mean **** to him).

Beyond that, look at the timeline; Alvarez talks break down in June, WBA announces the mandated fight, free negotiations period ends late July/early August (depending on when the announcement was made), fight goes to purse bid in August, and then the winning promoter is mandated to stage the fight by November.

With Daniel Jacobs already eying a keep-busy fight for July/August and Golovkin apparently planning to fight September, with or without Alvarez, the WBA seems to have made the political decision to let the already planned fights go ahead, before moving forward.

Golovkin fights Eubank Jr in September, (assuming he wins), the WBA declare Jacobs (who had just fought in August) mandatory challenger, free negotiations stretch into October, the purse bid is called, and the winning promoter has to stage Golovkin-Jacobs before the end of January (depending on the different timings; a January fight having the benefit of giving the handlers nearly 4 months to market the fight, while both fighters and take whatever rest needed and head into camp for full 12-week camps to sharpen up).

The WBA doesn't act as an impediment, and the mandated fight gets the opportunity to be built into a massive event.

Ah, my understanding was that the Golovkin-Jacobs fight would be held in September to replace the botched Golovkin-Alvarez event. Thanks for the insightful timeline BTW.

When fighters start referring to themselves in the 3rd person, I stop listening. DJ is the epitome of a paper champion. I am glad he can collect his paycheck after finding someone feather-fisted enough to dance with.
If Mora is knocking you down though, you might only have 1 leg to stand on.

The middleweight division is a joke. Golovkin needs to get out of there once he beats Eubank Jr.

Lara. The bogey man who was coming to knock GGG off his MW pedestal.
NSB was calling for him to face GGG, calling GGG a ducker, but no one wants to see him face Jacobs it seems.
It's almost as if people were calling for a fight with GGG because they knew it had no chance of really happening. Nah, can't be that surely.
