Maidana vs Porter - WHOYUGAT?

Porter no question, Maidana hits harder, but Porter is better in every other department, he's stronger, a much better athlete, quicker hands and feet, better jab, better footwork, better defence and more durable.

I think Porter would clearly UD Maidana, something like 9-3

Not at all. Maybe earlier on in his career you could have compared them and they both use their natural awkwardness to their advantage. Maidana's current overall boxing technique is actually significantly better though. He punches straighter, has much better balance, has a better, more varied jab, sets up his shots better, feints way better than Porter (this is a big one that Maidana is actually very underrated for) and his footwork is a little cleaner, educated (as in it sets him up better) and not quite as cross footed and squared up as much, which also ties in with the balance issue. He also has more power and arguably the better defense, as his defense sets up his offense and is used to transition, whereas Porter is either doing one or the other. He's wide open and easy to hit when attacking, but has good defense when only doing defense, but they don't rely on each other.

I would also say he counters better too.

Porter is faster, stronger and more physical, and while it's very possible he might win a fight between them, he's not 'better' at everything in terms of boxing technique. Porter is like a weird mix of Hatton and Mosley, but sloppier.

Porter is clearly the better general athlete, but his boxing technique, in terms of pure technique isn't as good as Maidana. Maidana relies on his technique, set up with a jab, and good feints to work. Porter relies on pure physicality, muscle and speed to achieve the same thing.

You bring up a few fights over a much longer career to gauge things that don't actually equate to making a fighter better or not.

For instance, although Porter won more rounds against Broner, Maidana beat him up much, much worse and did a lot more damage. I would rather have been Broner against Porter every day of the week and the scores were much the same in the end so I wouldn't agree there I think. Maybe the better way of putting it is Porter beat him easier on rounds scored, but Maidana beat him a lot better overall. I think it was a better version of Broner too.

The Alexander fight was an obvious low point of Maidana's career and his worst loss, but he just didnt look there. Porter has already had his share struggles and poor fights too and he's still got a long way to go. Anyway, we'll see how he goes.

Yeah Maidana has been known to overreach but he does have good balance. He throws big combinations moving forward and maintaining momentum. You can't put together quick big shots moving forward like that if you have bad balance.

Yeah for the type of offense Maidana throws he actually keeps his balance very well and is able to switch between leading, counters, offense and defense with it. Porter will literally throw himself off balance with his shots and overcommits to both his shots and his footwork. I think people are mistaking his athleticism, strength and physicality etc for technique. They are two completely separate things and in terms of pure boxing technique, Maidana is better despite his awkwardness, even though he may lose a fight between them too.

He legitimately beat Broner, who Porter beat more easily. Maidana troubled Mayweather initially by mobbing him, then got shut out for the rest of the fight and in nearly the whole 2nd fight. But, people remember the first 3 of the 24 rounds.
I do think it would be competitive, but Porter is just a step better at everything.

I disagree, chief. Maidana whooped a prime and undefeated version of Broner, dropping him twice and stunning him several times. Porter outworked what appeared to be a less focused version of AB in a sloppy fight where Broner hardly threw punches. Not to mention AB never seemed hurt and actually put Shawn on his ass.

Maidana went to war against JSK, a very solid journeyman, but eventually stopped him. Porter on the hand almost lost to Julio Diaz.

Porters style plays into Maidana's hands.
He's the better athlete, Maidana the better fighter and technician.

Porter is all about workrate but how much of his work is truly effective? and I don't think that is an even an advantage for him in this one.

He's too easy to time and had flattering matchmaking his whole career. He has fought literally two guys who had any jab to speak of what so ever.

Maidana by T/KO. Maidana might be crude but after Garcia he seems way better technically than Porter. Porter is nothing but bum rush, lead with head, lean on with head, smothers own shots, throws not that great of a jab, and throws a garbage overhand right. Porter likes to throw rabid punches behind the head and hits low a lot. He's a very dirty fighter that, for some reason, has flown under the radar with has dirty fighting shit. Maidana hits way harder and would land for sure. There's no way Porter is putting Maidana on the back foot. Porter can't really fight going backwards that well. If Porter got dirty Maidana would also and Maidana is better at it. I think Maidana breaks Porter's spirit and gets him out late after a few knockdowns. This would be a dirty war of a fight.

I thought Maidana was a lot more impressive than Porter was.
