  • It was a great fight but I'm really surprised boxing doesn't have more hardcore fans that would have watched this exciting matchup Saturday night... 2.4 million is good for what they have been doing but I was hoping for like 4 million...

And to the guy who said men's gymnastics was on....LOL....wtf....

So all the extra people just decided to watch only the 6th round on? How's that make sense? I'm sure extra people tuned in but another 1 million? Doubtful....

that's actually a poor rating for a free TV station in primetime. it's good for a boxing broadcast, yes; but the biggest, non ppv fights are on premium channels which cost 10-20 a month. you can get CBS for free with a stipend from the government for a digital converter box.

On Sunday morning, this press release was sent out by Showtime Sports regarding the television ratings for the broadcast carried on CBS. It read as follows:

“Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions; 9p – 11:30p Overnight Ratings

          – The main event of Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter, WBA Welterweight World Championship, began with a 2.0 rating and grew to a 2.6 in final half hour.

          – Ratings increased each half-hour from 9p –11: 30p showing growth throughout both broadcast bouts.

          – Overall, the 2 ½ hour broadcast earned 1.8 overnight rating which is 80-percent higher than (Chris) Algieri vs. (Errol) Spence (Jr.) broadcast (April 2016).

On the surface, this certainly sounds great from that perspective but it was also pointed out to me that, with CBS averaging 2.117 million viewers, it was the lowest broadcast network debut to date. The PBC on FOX telecast with Danny Garcia-Robert Guerrero averaged 2.235 million.
As usual, you fail to demonstrate even a basic understanding of how ratings work.

The press release you quoted regarding ratings in the final half-hour of the fight did NOT give out a total viewership number. You took info from one source (SHO press release, "2.6 rating in the final half hour") and combined it with info you got from another source ("average of 2.117 million viewers") - but the two numbers do not refer to the same thing.

Source 1 (SHO press release): 2.6 rating in the final half hour, from 11:00 to 11:27 pm.

Source 2 (unidentified): Average of 2.117 million viewers - BUT that's the average from 9:00 to 11:00 pm, the time slot traditionally measured by Nielsen.

Think I'm wrong? Here are the Nielsen numbers: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/article...6-25-2016.html. Nielsen very clearly indicates that the 2.117 million average is based on the 9-11 pm time slot.

That means the 2.117 million viewer average EXCLUDES the most-watched, highest-rated portion of the fight - the last half hour.

So what???? Garcia-Guerrero's ratings on Fox got crushed by figure skating on NBC and 48 Hours on CBS. Doesn't mean that Garcia-Guerrero and Porter-Thurman weren't worthwhile fights for boxing fans. Maybe you should just watch figure skating and 48 Hours instead.

No, the 2.117 million average is from Nielsen, and they calculate the average only in the scheduled time slot - i.e., the average is for the 9-11 time slot. See here: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/article...6-25-2016.html

The highest viewership was between 11 pm and 11:27 pm, so the 2.117m average does not take into account the period of highest viewership.

What you're saying is the opposite of how it really works. It's easier to average 2M viewers over 10 minutes than it is to average 2M viewers over 55 minutes.

And it's much more valuable for a TV network for a program to average 2M viewers over 55 minutes than to average 2M viewers over 10 minutes.
Not true at all. Average ratings is what advertisers care about. And for HBO they just need viewers. Time doesn't matter. They don't sell advertising.

And look at any compelling sporting event, the longer it goes the higher the ratings go and the higher the peak just like Thurman-Porter nba finals etc etc

                    Premature to say this.

You're comparing final numbers for all the other fights to preliminary numbers for Thurman-Porter.

And you're using an incomplete average for Thurman-Porter. The 2.12M average is from 9-11 pm, and the telecast went from 9-11:27 pm.

Wait for the final numbers so you have an apples to apples comparison.

You clearly don't understand how averages are calculated. Forget I mentioned it.
