  • It was a hell of a fight. I don't know why so many posters like to get into the nitpicking with ratings and numbers- we should all be hoping that as many casuals saw that fight as possible.

That was 2016's gold standard for high level competition in this sport. Major props to both guys, incredible performances all around. They're both coming out of this one elevated.

This is the only comment in this thread that REALLY matters, but keep arguing guys.

            They definitely reached 3M viewers.

For you neophytes, the preliminary Nielsen ratings, and the total viewership number, are for the prime time 9:00 - 11:00 pm time slot. As boxing fans know, the fight went past 11:25, meaning that almost half the main event - the most-watched part of the telecast - is not included in the preliminary rating or the viewership total.

Tomorrow they'll announce a peak of near or over 4M viewers.

Actually, the 2.4M average is just for the 9-11 pm time slot. Doesn't include the last half of the fight, which aired after 11 pm. The average will rise significantly when all the numbers come in.

So is it not fair to compare it simply to PBC past fights?

                NBC
                3.37m Thurman/Guerrero
                2.88m Garica/Peterson
                2.33m Porter/Broner
                2.2m Wilder/Duhaupas

                1.8m Figueroa/Demarco
                1.24m Spence/Algieri
                1.2m Fonfara/Smith

                FOX
                2.24m Garcia/Guerrero
                1.51m Berto/Ortiz

                CBS
                2.12m Thurman/Porter

The ratings are way down from last year's cards and CBS's first prime time show on Sat night and it did worse the the first PBC card on NBC and FOX. And this was supposed to be the biggest and best fight EVER on PBC and it did worse then most of the PBC fights to date. 6th highest rated of the TOTAL 10 shows they have aired to date on Sat prime time. Showtime is spinning the narrative well the main event is the most watched in 2016. But that is misleading because they are the ONLY ones airing on Network TV so by default last year and this year PBC was always going to have the most watched. But that don't make it successful.

This fight should of done 4-5m viewers just alone based on PBC's own standards. This was a better fight with fighters that have already been supposedly built up by PBC. Thurman and Porter have already done higher ratings themselves on PBC each in lesser fights they were promoting this fight for 1 whole year and showtime had a 4 part All Access show. I guess we have to seriously lower the ceiling for PBC if their best fight can only do around 2m viewers on CBS when 4 of the 5 NBC shows last year all did better ratings.

                • In the US maybe but channel 5 cards have done bigger numbers in the past here in the UK.

#1, Thurman is not Ali. Not fair to compare the two.

#2, and more importantly, in 1978, barely anyone had cable, and no one had internet, video games or Netflix. There were three TV networks, so viewership of each individual program was higher due to less competition.

Ali-Spinks, with its 70 million viewers, wasn't even the highest-rating TV program that week. It was #2.
