Judges are all over the place on fights now. Can't rely on anything with them... no consistency these days.

    • Thurman did well. Porter is an awful style to fight i think. I've always said i could see Porter getting some ugly wins over very good opposition in his career due to his style.

Thurman just edged it i thought. It will take fighters on the level of Brook and Thurman to beat Porter really.

I think Brook and Thurman are the two best guys at WW right now. That's the fight that needs to happen once Brook is done with Vargas.

Spence could be one of the top guys too but beating Algieri doesn't show that even if he did it well. Maybe Spence v Porter would be a good fight, see how he deals with that kind of pressure?

      • Tough fight, both guys will need a long break after. Scored it a draw but wouldn't have been surprised with 8-4 in either direction. I was leaning towards Porter myself as despite his mauling style he actually landed a lot of clean shots. More than I expected him to land. Thurman's defence is leaky.

I also have to ask, did anyone else find themselves wondering if Porter is clean watching this? I don't want to denigrate him so soon after a great fight, but the punch resistance, the strength, and the workrate didn't look normal to me. If he's clean he's arguably the best conditioned fighter in the entire sport.

        • Thurman won clearly due to his much much cleaner work.
Thankfully Porter didn't get another present like he did against Diaz.

Wouldn't be the first time I've asked myself that about him before.

            • Great fight! Good job by Thurman! Let's see Thurman vs. Cotto @ 150! Make it happen! Jarret Hurd is a problem! So is Justin DeLoach! 154 continues to impress!

Of course he's dirty..anyone who beats Paulie Malinaggi or beats someone who beat Paulie, they're dirty....just ask Paulie, he will tell ya...

                • First, I would like to give Shawn Porter all the respect and credit in the world for putting up such a spirited and courageous effort in his bout with Keith Thurman. He exceeded my expectations.

Personally, I thought Keith underestimated Porter. I expected him to move, clinch and box more but he proved me wrong; By trading and exchanging punches in the center of the ring which is Porter's (strength) as he was subsequently backed onto the ropes and swarmed on the inside by Shawn.

Overall, I thought Thurman won the fight on clean, accurate and effective punching. His punches were more ostensible than Shawn Porter's who mostly threw flurries when Thurman was on the ropes.

However, it was a very good fight and showing by both fighters as I was highly entertained by their performances. At the end of the day though, the best fighter won which was Keith Thurman.

                  • The best fighting the best, fight of the year, a great crowd in NYC, and on free tv (CBS ). A great night to be a boxing fan.

Porter lost but does it really feel like he lost??? Fights like this are what boxing needs: Porter took the L tonight but came out looking better than he did before the night started. I hope more fighters take notice and face tough competition more often and stop worrying about the Floyd method where the "0" is the end all be all.

This fight lived up to the hype for sure. Fights like this make a lot of the BS we put up with as fans worth it just so we can get nights like this.

Both fighters deserve a ton of credit. Hope we get more of fights like this in the near future.
Ironically, Floyd would be accused of "protecting his 0" if he fought either of these guys. Thurman and Porter are good fighters. Which means if you match em up, you'll get a competitive fight. Floyd is an ATG fighter. Which means if you put him in the ring with a good fighter, he'll probably win easily. Which his critics will interpret as him fighting an easy opponent.
