It's obviously Ali he is the big main stand name of boxing when it was at its highest heights but without guys like SRR who would motivate guys like Ali and so-on would we have had an Ali?
    Who knows.

To me Robinson is more iconic but Ali is the biggest name.

Ali is the biggest icon in boxing history...i doubt that will ever be surpassed. He transcended the sport into the mainstream on many different levels. He went beyond simple name recognition or being big within the sphere of the boxing world.

Ali and Tyson are the only boxers that have crossed over a more mainstream level. anywhere you go people know who you are talking about when their names are mentioned

Ali went beyond boxing, he was a cultural icon.

Ali of course. The average guy on the street probably doesn't know the difference between Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard in all honesty. But it must be remembered that most people didn't even own a TV when Robinson was fighting, i'm not even sure it would be a time when boxing would be broadcast on TV. Ali's rise to fame was right at the same time when the average person could finally own their own TV and his fights were broadcast.

Ali and Tyson are the only two boxers that are household names worldwide by young and old people. Floyd and Pacquiao are known worldwide but thats a lot to do with the social media/internet era too, making everything accessible.

Ali is the only really iconic boxer, Tyson is notorious, not iconic. No sportsperson really comes close on a worldwide level, maybe Pele? but Pele's fame is almost 100% to do with sport. I seen people mention Jordan but nobody really gives a damn about Jordan outside of USA. A lot of people know the name Michael Jordan but he's not a worldwide sporting icon, not even close, just an American one.

                  Ali most definitely.

People can argue about legacies and careers which is all subjective, but there's really no denying Ali's iconic status.
