thats what the greats do. .take fights ppl dont think youre ready for ..and win. thats what builds legacy. kovalev has the power to put ward to sleep no matter how many tune ups he has. no point in "marinating" this.

Hadnt Ward just fought at a catchweight? And hasnt Ward over the course of his career, fought at catchweights? Were two of his three fights prior to the super6 fought at a catchweight as well? It seems a little hypocritical to shame on someone for offering a catchweight to a person with a history of such, doesnt it?Comment

Exactly. Kovalev was in a better position to accept that type of "wait for it" contract. He was already a super champion at LHW, with the promise of a unification with Stevenson looking very grim to say the least. He really had "nothing better to do". Golovkin, at the time, had his sights set on then champs, Cotto, Lemieux, and Andy Lee. It wouldn't have made sense for Golovkin to agree to a fight down the road with Andre. I firmly believe that had Gennady signed to fight Ward, he would not be WBC champ today.
I can hear Canelo little pipsqueak voice now..."I am ready now. I want to fight now, but GGG is set to fight Ward. I keep my belt."
Cotto and Canelo both signed a contract agreeing that the winner of their fight would fight Golovkin next, at 160lbs, and neither of them actually wanted that fight.
If GGG had signed another contract agreeing to fight Ward, at around the same time he was expected to be fighting the winner of Cotto/Canelo for the WBC title, he might as well have torn the contract he already had with them in pieces and thrown it away.
Cotto and Ward even have the same promoter, ffs!Comment

This is what people keep missing, maybe because they want to miss it.

Another thing people are missing is that Golovkins goal is the history books. He wants to be the first undisputed champ in a decade in the MW division. He wants to break Bernard Hopkins record for title defenses. We that are alive now remember the guys that go up a division and win one or two belts, but when our grandchildren look up the great fighters of our day, they will look for who held the records, who was the very best. And Gennady Golovkin wants them to see his name when they look up undisputed champs and most successful defenses.Comment

I can imagine the WBC would have found a way to take Golovkins mandatory status and all that. Or maybe make him fight Heiland in an eliminator to let Canelo milk the belt a little longer. Signing to fight Ward would have been disastrous for Golovkins goal of unifying the division.

What really matters is who is the undisputed best fighter in each division. That's what boxing always used to be about and that's what it needs to get back to.Last edited by kafkod; 05-30-2016, 01:01 PM.Comment
