MOST of the fighters you are referring to would not take the same level of risk if they had a more well-rounded game.

I agree. That's why I enjoy it. It's a higher risk strategy with the benefit of giving the crowd more entertainment (win or lose) which brings in the $$$.

Chinny offensive fighters are always good to watch for the likely fireworks. Wlad became an awful, unwatchable fighter with Manny S and his highly effective defensive clinching. Watch him before his KOs to Brewster and lefty SA fella whose name I forget and he was a beautiful puncher with great combos. Or even Vitali who balanced offence and defence well.

I admire Floyd and Pernell as much as anyone but they are rare. They had a gift for high quality defence AND SHOWMANSHIP! Ward's a master boxer but I watch boxing for the punches and Kovalev will be thrilling IF HE LANDS.

Can't wait for the fight. Only the weight class and Ward's inactivity level him down otherwise he'd take Kovalev comfortably.

Not interested in showmanship at all, just watching quality fighters.

I have seen a million punchers...... I prefer better, high-skilled, fighters.

Corrie Sanders is a little under-rated, and could have had a much more successful career had he dedicated himself..... but he was no world-beater.

Sanders kept knocking Klitschko over because Wlad wasn't very good back then..... regardless as to how "beautiful" Klitschko's punches looked, they didn't seem to worry Sanders too much in that fight.

But from the business perspective you mentioned..... Klitschko would have had a much shorter career, and made much less money, if he hadn't hooked up with Steward.

But yea, I just prefer more technical/skilled fighters, always have.

Ward is ugly but effective sometimes, depending on the opponent.

Even Mayweather is ugly at times.

But an undeniable factor about a lot of pure boxers, or boxer/punchers, is how they remove their opponents strengths and always manage to find something that works..... look at say, the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight..... 1 guy fought his fight, and the other guy did not..... that is a fact that has been shamefully overlooked by a lot of fans.

this is a tough fight to analyze and i'm an expert at fight analysis.

andre ward is a very technical fighter but he's not quick like your typical african american fighter. however he does have some power behind him. but his fast twitch muscle fibers aren't really that great. he probably got that from his irish fathers side.

kovalev on the other hand was raised in a tough part of russia where people just dont give a **** about their livelihood. these guys are build to be strong and great fighters. kovalev is naturally stronger than andre ward but is he more skilled? i'm not sure. his movement is just as quick as andre ward, and their defense is similar except kovalev doesn't clinch as much. they are both 6'0" tall but kovalev has a slightly larger reach. again, ward does not have the typical afro american genes because if he did his reach would be longer. only time will tell.

i am choosing kovalev by UD though

I actually think Wlad was good back then but he gassed badly. His size didn't allow him to put out that much activity for too long. I also remember Sanders being overlooked at the time because Wlad was sparking everybody prior.

As I said, I disagree with very little you wrote. I just have a populist love for punchers. I do prefer a great offensive boxer to a brawler though, no matter how dangerous. Tommy Hearns is a favourite as well as Duran though he brawled as well. I'm looking forward to GGG actually being tested. He could be the goods.

Not sure if Wlad gassed, I remember Sanders got to him real early in that fight..... he was a fast tricky southpaw, maybe that was it, but Wlad's defense improved a lot with Steward.

Steward got him fighting tall, using his advantages, minimizing the risk.

He became a better fighter at the expense of his more risky offensive style.

I know what you mean though, offensive fighters are more attractive to most fans no question. I don't mean to sound ignorant here..... I am a big Mayweather fan, but I can't believe the insane numbers that he pulled considering 1) the point you are making about less offensive fighters being less popular 2) Floyd's ****ty personality outside the ring LMAO 3) the fact that he is African American.

Not sure if I believe the viewpoint that his haters drive those INSANE numbers, maybe they do, because it is hard to believe that many casual fans understand that level of skill.

And great point about Hearns/Duran..... I love Duran, but he got knocked out by a guy with better skills, but he had been beaten by another guy who had even better skills..... but yea they were all elite, superb defence, great skills, and a very well-rounded game.
