Or is there another reason? It has be something outside of boxing because they are both defensive fighters.

Because floyd was a master at marketing himself,,,, Ward is much more subdued and reserve..

Floyd is outgoing like shaq, while Ward is quiet like Tim Duncan

This is the correct answer to a large degree. There hasn't been a Ward around to like. But I can't honestly understand why non African Americans would care. No matter who they like or don't like, they're wrong so what's the point? Hopefully Ward just gets in the ring against top level opponents more.

Ward's never gonna pull the World Star Hip Hop demographic.

It's because casuals are drawn to the hip hop and money lifestyle and trash talk that Mayweather brings to the table. Being undefeated and talented won over the boxing and sports crowd, but his personality and ability to market himself is what separates Floyd from guys like Ward. Plus Floyd had a lot more big name opponents than Ward.

Ward has the talent, but not flash or personality to draw in the casuals.

Does any crowd regardless of race gravitate to Ward like Mayweather? Roy Jones was never even a big PPV star. Mayweather is a PPV star because people of all races and ethnic groups, hardcore fans and casual want to see him fight. Mayweather is a great fighter but he's also great when it comes to marketing himself.

Because Mayweather never took a long momentum halting hiatus and always had way more interesting opponents to fight.

There was that 18(?) month long retirement he had, but even then he was doing stuff to stay buzz worthy.

The bold is the defining factor. Mayweather doesn't get enough credit for being able to monetize his bad guy image and ultimately capitalize off the people wishing to see him lose.
