We could be spinning our wheels and GGG re-upped and they simply didn't say anything to the media. It would be my hope however that K2 keeps GGG a neutral free-agent so that he can play both sides of the fence like fighters used to do. He's reached the stage where he's a big enough attraction with both viewers and gate that either side could be willing to bring him in for their own big shows. My assumption would be they wanna keep GGG & they wanna make Canelo vs GGG as one of the better fights if not the best fight to make in boxing right now. They wanna show that on PPV & they wanna make the winner the next big PPV guy in boxing. Losing GGG would be a bad look for HBO where there isn't a whole lot to get excited about these days. Regardless if you think GGG is legit or hype there is lil to argue about him being one of the most popular guys on HBO these days who they are probably getting at a discount right now.
And if when GGG vs Canelo happens if GGG wins he'll be doing PPV's so its not gonna play too much into their regular HBO budget. And they probably wanna line up a rematch with Canelo right off to keep the heat on GGG. And Canelo will still be a PPV draw just for being the most popular Mexican in boxing, a heavily latino influenced sport. And maybe they'll have some great rivalry that can go a third fight. If Canelo wins then the Canelo train continues to run & they can just insure they got a "catch a L" pay scale in GGG's contract so he doesn't bust their bank fighting Eubank or whoever next & if he loses to someone else or if his popularity drops off with a L they can always drop him worst case. People seem not to know or forget networks can & sometimes do drop guys after L's or even add a lesser contracted purse after losing.
I always thought it'd be in HBO's best interest to have allowed Golovkin to go on Showtime and clean out their guys. I felt they should've allowed Kovalev to do that with Stevenson and he would've been a bigger name for their Ward ppv. Same thing here with GGG/Canelo. Let him beat the Showtime guys first.
As far as the HW division goes, HBO has arguably the best HW on the planet in Luis Ortiz. Their problem with him is his age. And imagine if HBO signed Parker for a fraction of the price Johsua signed for. I actually favor Parker in that match-up. So it could be that HBO simply didn't believe in Joshua for his price tag. But it's still discouraging that HBO's losing so many normal fights like Lemieux/GGG and Crawford/Postal to meaningless ppv's instead of growing those fighter's brands.Comment

True these things don't always get out so GGG might already be resigned who knows. And I can definitely see the allure of playing the free agent angle, but K2 doesn't seem like the guys who'd necessarily take that route. And right now idk that they wanna seem to anxious to play that card as they seemingly got the biggest fight of their career potentially next. Although granted they should be aware of the power they hold & wield it correctly, but they don't wanna overplay that power either. We could be spinning our wheels and GGG re-upped and they simply didn't say anything to the media. LOL that'd need to be a heck of an argument. I say Ortiz is the most overrated contender at HW right now. Although I guess Joshua is actually the most overrated cuz he's not really "the champion" he's merely a contender himself in reality. But the point is Ortiz hasn't really done anything & he's closer to 40 then anyone with only 2 notable wins should be.As far as the HW division goes, HBO has arguably the best HW on the planet in Luis Ortiz.
I think the juice isn't worth the squeeze for HBO with Joshua for sure. Just look at the numbers being thrown around for Joshua's last couple fights. I assume Showtime didn't match those purses, but they surely had to hit a respectable percentage of those purses he's been getting. Now look at HBO's roster that has P4P guys who've been with HBO for years now or got big fights lined up & look at their purses which seem to hover around $1.5M-$2M. It makes no sense to to add Joshua to HBO.So it could be that HBO simply didn't believe in Joshua for his price tag. But it's still discouraging that HBO's losing so many normal fights like Lemieux/GGG and Crawford/Postal to meaningless ppv's instead of growing those fighter's brands.
Plus it'd look ******ed if they signed Joshua & in his first fight they throw him in with the #1 HBO HW Ortiz & he got knocked off right then lol. Joshua could use some grooming & some building up his name in the US & Showtime will do that. Then in a couple years when HBO has transitioned some guys over to PPV, some guys have retired or got knocked off/left HBO they'll have some money to pick up Joshua who may have proven himself to be the real deal by then.Comment

That would be a huge steal for PBC. And this is exactly what PBC needs. I've been saying it since the beginning. They need to swipe these HBO guys & other top guys & bring them to PBC. That will legitimize them in a way any particular fight PBC could make today could never do.Comment
