Since showtime went after AJ, I'm pretty sure they would go after GGG
Golovkin HBO's contract is done?

Damn I thought or assumed GGG re-upped with HBO. If this is the case GGG might be jumping ship if HBO doesn't make the Canelo fight. If Showtime can offer him some solid $ he can go fight Jacobs. Or he can at least freelance & go to the UK & fight Eubank or BJS (if he'll actually fight him) for a lil bit.
I mean ultimately HBO has the reins here not the WBC or Oscar lets be real. HBO surely has veto power & more importantly the power to influence Oscar to their way of thinking. And assuming this Saturday PPV does garbage to semi-garbage numbers I see no reason HBO would wanna protect Canelo for future PPV profits as Canelo's rep is going to down the toilet by some degree if he avoids GGG.Comment

Eastcoast, this is an interesting point, something I didn't think about. You might be on to something.Or not. It was reported that HBO didn't even make an offer to Anthony Joshua. They could be in a holding pattern. Let GGG be a free agent and get fights on Showtime with Jacobs, Chavez Jr, DeGae/Jack, Quillin, ect, build his name bigger then bring him back to HBO for a bigger Alvarez ppv.
I just think HBO can simply not approve any of Canelo's opponents other than GGG-that becomes a defacto suspension the same way their Haymon policy was a defacto ban.Comment

They coulda been saving money for GGG too.
What does Joshua really offer HBO? Fury isn't with HBO. Ortiz is, but holds lil appeal. I mean the HW division still doesn't seem to hold THAT much appeal even if the trajectory is upwards for them lately.
Plus Joshua, despite the strong fanboy-ism with him right now, has done lil to invest a lot into him for someone like HBO as far as long term deals go. I mean lets be real Showtime is taking a risk here signing a guy who's ultimately fought one barely live opponent who was a prospect more than a legit contender, but they got room & probably need to take some risks.Comment

Nah I think betting on Joshua and the rest of the heavyweight division is one of the safest bets in boxing. Especially with the way things have been as of late. They coulda been saving money for GGG too.

Who does HBO have to fight Golovkin and keep getting increasing ratings? They already had to make Golovkin/Lemieux a ppv (just like they're now making Crawford/Postol a ppv). That's another thing, TR is now making ppv's and admitting they're going to get low ratings well in advance. TR is stuck with HBO, otherwise I don't think they'd be doing that. They coulda been saving money for GGG too.

If HBO forced Golovkin/Alvarez, Golovkin would kill him and then what? You just damaged Canelo's stock, and you're once again left with no one for GGG to fight b/c everyone else is on Showtime. Alvarez can fight Clottey and draw close to 2 million viewers.
You could be right, and HBO wants to stay in the GGG business and keep putting on fights with Tureano Johnson, BJS, Heiland, and Korobov for $2mill a pop.
I agree, Joshua is a big price tag for a guy still taking developmental fights, but he has major potential and doesn't have boring fights like Wlade or Fury.Comment

I've been talking about this for some time
Debunking the PBC fighters can't fight on HBO Theory Myth and GGG's HBO contract
Why is Dan Rafael lying by saying Haymon's fighters were banned by Hershman when that's not the case. This is how rumors get started and continually trickled out to the masses.
According to Dan Rafael:
http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/p...e-dominic-wade
Anyone who follows boxing should already know that Haymon, the Premier Boxing Champions creator, and HBO had a serious fracture in their relationship a couple of years ago. Because of that, Haymon’s fighters are banned from the network, a decision made by former HBO Sports president Ken Hershman.
From Ken Hershman:
Con****uously missing from HBO's schedule are fighters managed by Haymon, not coincidentally fighters who have mainly eschewed competitive fights until a big payday was on the horizon. While the rumor mill says Haymon is essentially barred from doing business with the network, Hershman insists that isn't true. He'll make a deal with anyone—if it's the right deal.
"I don't think anything changes," he said. "Our strategy has been consistent. We want to invest in fighters, promoters and managers that see a long-term future with HBO and who we can comfortably put our money and our platform behind to build them into the stars they deserve to be. As long as those business objectives are met, we'll buy fights from anybody.
"In the conversations we have with promoters, there's no way to avoid crossing over with fighters who are managed in some capacity by Al. We don't tell people not to bring up those names. We have the conversations. And I'm sure at some point those conversations will result in Al's fighters being on HBO. I don't know in what capacity and I can't predict when, where or how. But we don't rule anything out and we don't ban anyone. It's not about that. We're just trying to articulate to everyone in the community what our objectives, goals and requirements are. Hopefully there are enough people who agree with them and see the benefits of being on the HBO platform."
This is just piss poor lazy journalism by Dan and he loses a lot of credibility.
Moving on.
Let's talk about GGG's contract with HBO. http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/p...exclusive-deal
"The deal calls for a minimum of four fights, although the Geale bout was the first one under the contract. The agreement also has provisions for overseas fights and potential pay-per-view fights, meaning there could be far more than four bouts. The bottom line is that all of Golovkin’s fights, wherever they may take place, will be on HBO or HBO PPV for the foreseeable future".
GGG met his 4 fight minimum obligation with HBO as of Willie Monroe Jr, so who's to say GGG can't fight Jacobs or Lara on another network on a fight by fight basis as stated by Tom Loeffler, himself?
Let's put an end to all of this PBC fighters can't fight on HBO and GGG can't fight outside HBO like he did against Adamu, GGG's HBO contractual obligations, etc excuses once and for all.
It's a bunch of BS excuses to not hold GGG and HBO accountable for attempting to make the best fights and it needs to stop.Comment
