Golovkin HBO's contract is done?

My assumption would be they wanna keep GGG & they wanna make Canelo vs GGG as one of the better fights if not the best fight to make in boxing right now. They wanna show that on PPV & they wanna make the winner the next big PPV guy in boxing. Losing GGG would be a bad look for HBO where there isn't a whole lot to get excited about these days. Regardless if you think GGG is legit or hype there is lil to argue about him being one of the most popular guys on HBO these days who they are probably getting at a discount right now.Who does HBO have to fight Golovkin and keep getting increasing ratings? They already had to make Golovkin/Lemieux a ppv (just like they're now making Crawford/Postol a ppv). That's another thing, TR is now making ppv's and admitting they're going to get low ratings well in advance. TR is stuck with HBO, otherwise I don't think they'd be doing that.
If HBO forced Golovkin/Alvarez, Golovkin would kill him and then what? You just damaged Canelo's stock, and you're once again left with no one for GGG to fight b/c everyone else is on Showtime. Alvarez can fight Clottey and draw close to 2 million viewers.
You could be right, and HBO wants to stay in the GGG business and keep putting on fights with Tureano Johnson, BJS, Heiland, and Korobov for $2mill a pop.
I agree, Joshua is a big price tag for a guy still taking developmental fights, but he has major potential and doesn't have boring fights like Wlade or Fury.
And if when GGG vs Canelo happens if GGG wins he'll be doing PPV's so its not gonna play too much into their regular HBO budget. And they probably wanna line up a rematch with Canelo right off to keep the heat on GGG. And Canelo will still be a PPV draw just for being the most popular Mexican in boxing, a heavily latino influenced sport. And maybe they'll have some great rivalry that can go a third fight. If Canelo wins then the Canelo train continues to run & they can just insure they got a "catch a L" pay scale in GGG's contract so he doesn't bust their bank fighting Eubank or whoever next & if he loses to someone else or if his popularity drops off with a L they can always drop him worst case. People seem not to know or forget networks can & sometimes do drop guys after L's or even add a lesser contracted purse after losing.Comment

For sure a possibility.
HBO has been good at picking up proven guys at the right time or getting guys cheaper & then grooming them into more importance on HBO Boxing. And matter of fact they are usually good at releasing guys when they have done most of what they are going to do. Floyd was a bad move, but Floyd priced himself out & was able to prove HBO wrong, but thats the exception for them not the rule. If HBO picks you up they got a plan for you & I just don't see a plan for Joshua on HBO right now.Comment

You must be in the UK.
I don't think overall the HW division holds much appeal...yet...its getting there & its looking better, but its not there yet & it might not even get there & there is lil reason to pay Joshua what he's been making in the UK to fight the Charles Martin & Dillian Whyte caliber guys on HBO.
And okay, lets say Joshua is the next Tyson of the HW's. Who's he fighting to make the next HW superfight during this contract? Tyson just had one of the most boring HW title fights in the history of boxing. Wilder throws punches that look like a giant 7 year old working the heavy bag for the first time. Definitely not a safe bet at all for what I expect the price tag to look like.
If I was HBO I could easily see the wait & see approach with him. Maybe he doesn't pan out. Maybe he gets better & 2yrs from now they can scoop him up as guys like Ward, Kov & GGG get older, move to PPV &/or retire & they'll be room for new blood in their budget.Comment

There's no reason to leave...as long as HBO continues that financial backing and as long as the Canelo fight is a possibility.
But if Canelo insists on 155 after this fight and dumps the WBC, then maybe Golovkin should look.
How long can HBO continue paying Golovkin while they're still trimming their budget?Comment
