Comments Thread For: 'Fighting Words' - How One Scorecard Ended Judge Lloyd Scaife's Career

by David P. Greisman - The problem, Lloyd Scaife soon recognized, is that he hadn't initially realized there was a problem. And at that moment, barely minutes after the fight he'd been scoring from ringside was over, so too was the career of the 85-year-old boxing judge.

Why do they have a senile old man score a high profile fight?

How come we don't have young judges? Would at least a 40 year old be too much to ask?

Very interesting. If one is of the age that he doesn't have the reflexes to operate a motor vehicle, can they really judge a sport like boxing in which even most fans can't see all the punches?

Glad to see a judge actually dealt with (not that I have anything against him or relish in this) but why does this not happen more often? Notoriously shyt judges like Adelade Byrd need to be flushed from the sport. The problem isn't the old guy who had a good career and then makde an egregious, easily noticeable mistake. It's the ones who consistently favor a certain type of fighter and make questionable judging over hundreds of fights.

Yep. And it wouldn't hurt to make judges take competency exams on a regular basis. This isn't like the amateurs, these are fighters who make their living in pro boxing. Same applies to refs. All participants in the sport should be competent or should just go back to being the guy in the 15th row watching the fight.

Look back at the many incompetent refs thru the years. Russell Mora in Agbecko/Mares I with the low blows Mares was reigning down and not called on. Laurence Cole (in too many scroo-ups to mention - his pop ran the TX athletic commission up til recently), Kenny Bayless in Maidana/Floydie II, kept breaking them up whenever Maidana got close to Floydie... before a clinch had even happened, Joe Cortez with the same thing in Hatton/Floydie... and the list goes on for days.

Judges are even worse it seems. Just this past weekend... Kalajdzic/Browne fight... 2 of 3 were ridiculous score cards. Pacquiao/Bradley I (need I say more?). Castillo/Floydie I. Cloud/Campillo. Williams/Lara (thankfully, those judges were at least suspended).

We can sit around and let it happen, or we can be much louder every time this b.s. occurs. I've emailed state athletic commissions a few times after a pathetic call. As it is, the sport drops a notch in sports fan's eyes every time we have this incompetence or corruption.

Were they? Great to know. That one always bothered me (not a Lara fan but an injustice is an injustice).

Damn I didn't know this cat was 108 years old. I've been dissing this guy since that went down. He was the new & a more extreme version of CJ Ross to me.

Sounds like a guy who just digs boxing who's old as f#ck & his body/mind isn't as there anymore. Can't really blame him. This is the commission's fault. I mean cmon man do we really want old cats in there trying to monitor whats happening in a fast paced sport like boxing?

Granted I don't know if there should be a age rule or just some sort of visual & mental obstacle course people need to pass, but there needs to be a conversation had with boxing commissions about this.

Yes, I don't know the duration, but NJSACB suspended all 3...
