Which 5 wins, and in which order, do you consider to be the best of Joe Louis? And why?

    The Schmeling rematch.

for obvious political reason's. If he lost to max again that would of been the end of his career pretty much.
Some commentator's go far enough as saying it was the reason the allies won the war

edit: oh you said 5. my bad.

It's kinda sad for such a legend to have Max Schmeling as his best win. But seen from a historical perspective, it was indeed a relevant win.

You make it seem like Max was a bum. he wasn't.
This is a fantastic watch if you havent already seen it:

so sad he ended up as a doorman, broke and with a terrible coke habit.
Max actually paid him a huge amount of money and also paid for his funeral, great guy.

Interesting documentary, I will have to watch it.
Regarding Schmeling being a bum, he certainly wasn't at that time.
But in modern heavyweight, he wouldn't even be competive.

Max Schmeling was a beast in training camp. I think Schmeling imo is top 5 GOAT. The Garden loved him, Ring Mag loved him, until dirty politics due to the Third Reich forming is what fkcD his career. Thomas Hauser can't write a book about Schmeling because he's ***ish and it would be considered Pro German. He and Louis stayed friends if I recall correctly. These two are legends in crazy ass times we take the world for granted.

That's what I said, he never acknowledged the Third Reich's agenda, and after the 2nd bout losing to Louis who knows what pressures were layed upon him given the fact that he was always uncomfortable.

Lots to learn you do about American politics, especially with American *** Culture. As you may think it's easy for Hauser to do that or an American ***, he'd have to be comfortable with the consequences to come. Most Hollywood films revolving WWII, given the Producers funding them and its film distributors, they are the one's that green light the style of a WWII film. Even though Spielberg did Schindler's list he still got criticism for making out Oscar Schindler tooo compassionate. Luckily it was Speilberg not any other ******* aspiring non ***ish filmmaker. There are things even in this generation where you cannot budge the status quo.

                Max Schmeling was the dude!

I respect Schmeling, but come on, he wouldn't be able to beat guys like Vitali, Lewis, Tyson, Holyfield, etc. He would even get knocked out by David Haye or Alexander Povetkin.

For his time, in that context, Schmeling was indeed great. But by modern standards, not very much. He is not even in the top 50 ATG list of heavyweights.

And think why... we discussed the politics.

modern fighters don't count because the school of it evolved. How could we say Tyson would beat this is ridiculous Cus'D'Amato wouldn't have been great to pass the knowledge without seeing what the greats did. Its a paradoxical statement to say modern fighters would school...

Just like Michael Jordan and the rest of the moderm learned the style from Julius Iriving and he from Russell perhaps.. Abdul Jabar's sky hook was sick..

Anyhow, imo, both skillfully and politically, Schmelling is top 5 GOAT.
