Ward was terrific, I really dislike the bastard but he sure is a great fighter. He wasn't able to maul Barrera like he did the 168 pounders but he just boxed so beautifully from the outside, quite entertaining too. 118-108.

I thought Ward was obviously rusty. You could see that his timing was off with how he got hit more than usual and especially with how wide he was missing on some of his punches.

But you also saw glimpses of why many of us think so highly of him. Once he got going a little bit he was blocking or rolling most of Barrera's shots beautifully and he mixed up his own offensive attack pretty well.

I'd like to see him get his right hand dialed in a little more but that should come with time and with a few more fights.

Predictable outcome. Barrera is a B level guy and a good opponent for testing the waters at 175. Ward got some good work in, without incurring too much damage. It will be interesting to see who his next opponent is. Definitely nobody who might derail the megafight with Kovalev.

IMO if Ward gets another fight in before Kovalev, it will be a Shelby Pudwill type of fighter which he used to tune up before the Super Six started.
Good points. I've never seen this Shabranskyy guy fight so I don't know how similar he is to Kovalev, but I do know that Ward needs one more before that fight. Another thing is, I don't know who Kovalev will fight in the meantime that will remotely compare to Ward.

You think they are mutually exclusive? There have been tons of great boxers who were also great punchers.
