People paid to watch him because he consistently fought top 5 fighters. And when he didn't, Berto, people didn't pay as much. His personality didn't change from May '15-Sep '15, his level of competition did. Highly skilled and fought the best of his era. That's the way he became a big star. Sure his personality helped but his skills helped even more. The only reason I brought up GGG is because you claimed it was viral marketing. Floyd was a star before viral marketing became a thing. GGG is a product of viral marketing. More boxers need to follow Floyd's footsteps with their level of competition. Show me any fighter in history with a streak like Floyd starting with winning the lineal title against Baldomir up until Pacquiao.

I didn't bring up viral marketing, someone else did. Point taken though.People paid to watch him because he consistently fought top 5 fighters. And when he didn't, Berto, people didn't pay as much. So what if floyd called himself a businessman. NO offense dude, but you and some others keep trying to pretend that Floyd's PPV sales are driven by something other than people liking him.But at the same time everyone looked up at Tyson not as a business man, they looked at him a as a wrecking entertainment machine. Floyd is priding himself as the best businessmen.
In my Opinion Tyson elevated the sport because of what he was, even when he did make crazy money for ****ty fights. But yeah you do have a valid point i just think tyson brought something extra to the sport.
Your whole premise is that Floyd's actions control what other men do as far as business. These men make their own decisions.
"Risk averse" is where sports is now. Pitchers used to throw every 4 days, now its every 5 and they don't go 9 innings. NBA players would try and play 82 games, now thw stats geeks have them playing 65-70 games and getting rest to avoid injury. NFL is changing as well, rules are there to protect the QB and WR. top golfers and tennis players FFS play limited number of tournaments when the get to the Tiger/Spieth/Serena level. Hockey is eliminating fighting. Youth soccer is limting heading the ball.
Haymon and HBO are getting their big names easy fights that showcase them rather than putting them in tougher fights. This has happened since Tyson sold so much with McNeely. That was the point where everyone realized name fighters and not great fights is what sells.
You seriously blaming Floyd for this?Last edited by The Big Dunn; 03-10-2016, 01:10 PM.Comment

And the ones who want to see a good, memorable fight. Something that's worth the money.
Boring people en route to a UD win is certainly not worth the money.Comment

............yet millions kept coming back. Says a lot really.
So boring............millions watched him box.Comment

I didn't, but now that you bring it up the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight has set a dangerous precedent, and it would also be foolish to say that it won't have an influence in the future. Fighters will be more keen to delay good fights(for example Canelo) which can't be good for boxing. But that's not just Mayweather's fault.Comment

no that's not it at all, GGG situation is one example and doesn't just apply to Oscar/Canelo, look at the SWW division as a prime example, look at fighters who emulate Floyd... Broner for example, he lost yes but he tried to take the easiest path to do what floyd did and it backfired (he just isn't as talented as floyd) we can all Say Maidana is a beast and even though he is a good fighter he wasn't anything special. I bet many felt that he was a cherry pick for Broner when the fight was announced just a year prior he lost to Devon Alexander. look at the Frampton/Quigg/Rigo etc. fckery. This is happening all over the place.Comment

De la Hoya fought nearly everyone who wanted to fight him.Comment
