thats the thing-it was always forced by stars. what you didn't have then was the internet, that allows people to post whatever they feel.
Can you imagine some of the posters here on NSB going to a bar in LA or Texas, talking boxing, and calling Canelo a *** coward and not a true mexican because he fights at 155?Comment

True. The same thing applies to fighters turning down offers and match-ups for whatever reason. That's been going on all the time but it wasn't an issue back then because nobody outside of the fighters teams even knew it had happened.chavez/sweetpea not chavez/ODH. I meant to say it was for the lineal tile at a CW.
I think we are about on the same page. I am not trying to make it seem like every fight was a CW. My only point is there are major fights where CW's are not a huge issue prior to the internet.
Now, it's all over social media and people are yelling "duck" and "coward" every time it happens.
Going back to the CWs, I'm sure it would have been an issue, in any age or era, if a world title was being defended at CWs repeatedly, with "A side" title holders refusing to fight their challengers - even mandatory challengers - on any other terms.
Eg, SRL never even tried to defend the WBC LHW title he won from Lalonde because he knew he wasn't big enough and the WBC would never have allowed him to defend at CWs against legit LHWs because of the backlash they would have got from the fans.
And if anybody was an "A side" fighter, it was SRL, back in his day.Comment

A sides guys long refused to fight certain guys. without the internet, we just didn't know.
Using the comments about froch./ward and manny/jmm 5 as a guide, Imagine what would've been said about SRL not rematching Hagler?
Boxing was just more enjoyable without the internet. Too much information always makes things less likeable. Just like veal-used to be delicious until you saw on TV what happened before it got to your plate.Comment

Or what about the 3rd fight between SRL/Duran that took 9 years after the No Mas fight?True, SRL did get a ton of backlash for that.

Remember when SRL invited Hagler to a charity event back in 82, and he announced the fight will never happen and he will retire.
He didn't have to do that to haglerComment
