What I have been saying for months. GGG wants the WBC strap for sure, but the bigger prize is the payday that comes with it. He just needs to look at what Amir Khan is making, a reported guaranteed $8 million, to see what he is leaving on the table by playing hardball.
The last thing GGG and K2 want is for Canelo to vacate. Without Canelo there are no big money fights for GGG in the future and he is on the wrong side of 30 to wait it out.
I think in the end the fight gets made for May of 2017 at 155 in exchange for a bigger money split then quite frankley GGG deserves. Probably 65-35 in the end.

If GGG holds his ground and forces Canelo to either fight him or be stripped where does canelo go from there?

He will struggle to make 154 and if he gets stripped of the title he will lose a lot of respect and fans. I don't think all the balls are in cannel's court at all. Or what is he gonna do stay at 155 without a title now and expect guys like I dunno bradley or something to go up and fight him.

Presuming they believe in themselves it is in the best interests of both guys to make the fight. The winner will be the biggest star in boxing by a country mile. The difference is Canelo's team don't believe in him. They don't believe he can beat GGG.

Golovkin has to give ground on weight. Can he make 157 or 158 without losing strength? We don't know and neither GGG or K2 team will ever admit as much as it would weaken their hand in the up-coming negotiations. You cling to 160 in negotiations and then cede ground bit by bit.

Look at it from Canelo's point of view. If he refuses to budge from 155 and gets stripped of the belt then there is quite considerable negative fallout. So maybe giving up 2 lbs to fight at 157 would be worth the risk. (of course assuming that the WBC haven't already had a quiet word along the lines of "don't worry son, we are not stripping you")

What we have here is a situation where both fighter's promoters are scared to lose. The writer points out that Golovkin is avoided now. The only reason any middle weight has to fight him now is for a shot at his titles - currently Golovkin presents a high risk high reward fight to other MWs.

Well what would Golovkin's situation be if he lost his titles? He would be lose all meaningful chance of fighting for decent money at MW as there'd be even less fighters willing to engage - he'd become a high risk low reward fighter like Rigo or Lara. His only option would be to start again at SMW - and there are no big money fights there currently so that is not such an attractive option.

GBP are walking a fine line. On the one hand they are promoting Canelo as a fearless young lion who will fight anyone and on the other hand if he would lose to Golovkin much of his mystique would evaporate with a 2nd loss. On the other hand, get stripped and duck Golovkin and much of the fearless young lion image would no longer apply either.

Both need to give a little bit, 158 would seem about right but GGG might even have to contemplate 156 by the time the dust settles.

Saunders sounded off, we can get a UNIFIED MW Champ THIS YEAR, while itll look like Canelo ran with his tail between his legs. And if that Champ is indeed GGG, hes in the perfect position to get some good fights as theyll be no way around him. Come the conclusion of May 7th if Canelo continuesto sit at 155 with how loaded 154 is atm and GGG sitting north..wont be a good look for Canelo.

I doubt Canelo avoids GGG this Sept however..
Much depends on whether WBC will actually go through and strip Canelo.

If Canelo avoids GGG any longer he's the one that will end up looking like a fool in the end, it will be a serious hit to his reputation and who's he going to fight that's as big as a GGG fight for him? The answer is nobody, he can pick and choose from guys at 154 getting them to come up to his division but there's not a single fight there that would be the mega fight a GGG fight would be.

Everybody screaming GGG needs Canelo but Canelo needs GGG just as bad if he wants the biggest fight available to him right now, otherwise he looks like a guy looking for the easiest fights and avoiding the best challengers. I used to have a lot of respect for Canelo.

If he wants to fight Canelo at 160 he needs to take his belt and wait. Stop with these step aside agreements. Canelo can get down to 155 right now because he is young. He can't kill himself to make wait as he gets older.

Do you know how old Hopkins was when he unified with Trinidad? 36 years old.
                    .
The amateur records are taken out of context. Rigondeaux is said to have 500 amateur fights with 2 Gold medals..

Floyd fought in the USA, a hell of a different set of competition vs trained by who for Golovkin? Floyd won 3 national golden gloves in 3 different weight classes. Was robbed a Gold medal, the same effect that happened to Roy Jones Jr...

Floyd turned pro at 19, and the same year from the Olympics. Golovkin at 24, a Silver, yet turned pro 2 years later.... Who were all these amateurs before and after, who knows? Floyd went up in weights...I mean seriously Golovkin being mentioned with Floyd is a bit pathetic when you hear all the reasons from fans that want to see Floyd vs Golovkin. It just never stops.

I just don't understand that if Golovkin is supposedly the favorite to win and beat everybody at 160, yet can't cut weight for Canelo but for Floyd yes, but doesn't dare to move up to prove p4p eliteness... Just doesn't make sense. The whole ''he's trying to unify belts'' gets old. History will show that the best at 160 ducked him. If that's the case, move up! Get another belt in a higher division. If Golovkin were to move up and win a title bout at 168 I'm sure he'd be ranked #1 p4p indefinitely. And his pay power increases.

Until then, all I see is traditional hype jobs from Loeffler just giving pennies to fighters like a cheap guy of his kind buying low in wall street. His kind is typical.

Personally I don't want them to fight this year. Alvarez hasn't been that impressive. He lacks the aura Trinidad & Leonard had when they moved to challenge Hopkins & Hagler. I'd rather see Golovkin fighting Jacobs & Saunders this year instead.

Canelo wasn't that impressive vs Cotto, Trout, or Lara. Angulo and Kirkland were clearly shot and now he's fighting a blown-up Khan. Most exciting thing about Canelo is his red hair.
