Simple: variety of programming. Neither HBO nor Showtime makes a penny from people watching their shows. All they care about is whether or not subscribers have paid for that month's programming.
I guess but that gets murky legally, and is not a sustainable model.

Variety is great but looks like they could get similar numbers if they spent 20x less on boxing. It's a very hard sell

LMao... Morales, barrera, etc were much bigger draws that today's Golovkin or Ward..

Hopkins was drawing PPv dollars with dudes like joppy, taylor, winky..

      Floyd was dicing up gatti

Shane headlined a bunch of PPVs

Who had a legitimate number of PPv draws,,, today you have one with canelo..

Fyi -- Im pretty sure Hopkins vs. Winky and Taylor were not PPV's. Hopkins-Joppy was a PPV flop.

Shane Mosley only headlined PPV's as the B-side to Oscar. Im not sure what other PPV's you're referring to. The only other PPV he fought on back then, he was on the undercard.

I could go on but you get the point.

Boxing has gotten even less popular since, but most of those guys were still marginal draws. Floyd vs 4x Foty participant Gatti did like 350k. Iirc Pac Morales set a record at 350k below LW? GGG is a bigger draw than most of those guys already. That said, overall I agree, boxing is very lacking in star power right now, with main dude with questionable upside

Lmao... Floyd, morales, manny doing 350k+,,, double what Golovkin has done as the A-side,, yet ggg is the bigger draw... Lmao,, seriously, did you even watch boxing then....

How can one say people that did 350k+ are smaller draws than a guy that headlined one PPv that was below 200k.. Lmao

Yes, yes you are absolutely right. Looking at that list...thank God the PPV model has been marginalized. Most of those should not have been on ppv.

So did I although at some point (a few years after) I became far more selective. Can't believe GGG-Lemieux was a PPV.

Those fights featured 2 HOFs with a built in fanbase. You know when you put in 2 Ppv draws together, it usually adds up to more than sum of the parts? Plus most of those guys couldn't sell out MSG AND the forum vs a no name
