Originally posted by Butch.McRae View Post(3) Kovalev is a very good fighter, but I have been told by many people from Slavic countries that he is not the real deal (pointing to his amateur career) and that GGG and Beterbiev are, so I'm not sure what to believe.

You'll be the main one if Ward wins that will say he ran and held. I agree mostly but we can see that a lot of them have tremendous power and it is said that power can't be increase, so....
That's true, hard to believe but true. At my opinion, eastern european wave only begin... I have great hopes for two of them : Oleksandr Usyk and Dmitry Bivol (Beterbiew also if his shoulder is OK)
(2) Drug testing is a very serious issue in that region of the world (based on recent news coming from RN). I look forward to seeing the development of some comprehensive testing system for all parties involved in the sport of boxing. The US/UK also has a ways to go in this department.
(3) No doubt, I have enjoyed the skill I am seeing come out of the Slavic region, but I would like to point out the differences with the way amateurs and professional ranks work as well. The average age of a Slavic amateur versus and US/UK Amateur is significantly higher. Slavic fighters turn pro much later (on average), and are more prepared to deal with the rigors of the professional ranks (at least physically).
(4) Thus, that "power" you speak of may be somewhat attributed to (1) the lack of any meaningful drug testing, or (2) the age of the fighters when they turn pro and their ability to sustain strength and conditioning because they went pro after their bodies have already "settled".
I think the 2nd proposition is more likely, but number 1 can't be ignored either.
Either way there's no denying the region is making serious noise in boxing right now.

Remember how he was chilly to go in UK recently to fight Froch. But in the same time GGG, Kovalev, Lomachenko and others are always fighting outside of their country. They always have a disadvantage...
But now that Ward is fighting (trying to fight...) in light-heavyweight, we will have the confirmation or invalidation of his greatness, because in that division there is a lot very good eastern european fighters (Kovalev, Beterbiev, Shabranskyy , Egor Mekhontsev, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, Dmitry Bivol) . And as his speciality is to fight some non-US fighters in his own backyard in USA, he will have the big choice...
I would be convince only after his fight against Sullivan Barrera. Same for GGG with Canelo... but for Kovalev I'm already convinced.
Andre Ward was the man at 168lb and rightly so. Now it's time for him to make his mark at 175lb, starting vs Barrera. He's a live dog, kinda basic but has good technique and a deep amateur background. This won't be an easy fight, but Ward will be prepared of course. His trainer is an admirer of the Cuban style so both sides might have a trick or two up their sleeve.

Personally, I don't think Andre Ward did the same at 168. He's curiously never been very vocal about fighting a 168 pounds belt holders like DeGale, Badou Jack (or even the Direll brothers).
However, he's a tremendous fighter, the way he fought the bigger Edwin Rodriguez showed his enormous skill set but at my opinion he has not cleaned the 168 division, which is getting better...
He completely cleaned out 168, learn the sport newbie.
