As with all Ward's fights the referee is important. If he allows Ward to punch then dive in head down and clinch to avoid the counter it makes it very tough for the other guy. If the ref makes him stand off more, or warns him or deducts points (which he should but which Ward has not yet suffered) then it makes the fight ugly and points the opponent at a disadvantage.

Bro you guys act like clinching isn't apart of boxing? It's not just for fighters you hate. Refs almost never penalize a fighter for that! The opponent should know what's coming and strategize for that!

I have barely seen Kovalev lose a round, never mind a fight.

Much of Ward's touted skill is centred around his abilities on the inside, but chances are that won't be a factor against Kovalev.

I disagree with that, Ward is likely the most well-rounded fighter in the game today.

It is possible, but Kovalev is coming down in weight too. This isn't a small LHW we're talking about.

True, but that comment was not centered around KOvalev, it was centered around Ward. KOvalev won't be able to push Ward around, or walk through his punches, like many are saying.

That fight will be a boxing match, and it won't be pretty.

I don't think this is correct.

I think the confusion arises from the fact that the amateur and pro weight classes don't correspond directly and the difference between the 'one-off' pro fights and amateur tournaments that include multiple fights over several days.

An amateur LHW weights up to 170 pounds and because there are several fights in the Olympics or Worlds this has to be pretty close to his real fighting weight because he can't repeatedly lose 10 pounds and put in on again during the course of a tournament. This is why it is fair to point out that Ward fought at LHW as an amateur but it isn't as if he fought at 175 weigh in then 185 on fight night.

I don't believe that Ward ever fought 'at or near MW early in his career.' If anyone can show me evidence of this I'm listening but I've never seen any evidence of it. Ward is a big SMW who is moving up. He moved from 170 fighting weight to win his Olympic Gold and never fought at 160, he went straight to 168 which as by far the most natural move for hi.

I am white, and I think that boxers make terrible role models..... if you want your kid to look up to a fighter instead of a doctor or a teacher, I think you need to review your priorities.

In saying that..... imho, Andre Ward and Shawn Porter are two of the most outstanding young sportsmen on the planet today.

Porter is not on Wards level, that's not what I meant...... I mean that both of those guys are fine outstanding young men, and a credit to their family/race. Very impressed with the way Porter carries himself.
