I gotta side with my fellow Wilder fans here. I think my man does a number on Povetkin and shocks people yet again. Povetkin's a great fighter, vicious combinations, tough as hell, deep, deep amateur background. But he's also small, slow of feet, and very hittable. He's at a tremendous physical disadvantage and will need to fight out of his skin to get to Wilder. Wilder on the other hand only has to keep him at arm's length and strafe him with stiff jabs and right hands and there's very little Povetkin can do about it. Wilder may have looked chitty in his last few fights, but he was far from fighting at his best. The Stiverne fight showed he can step it up when he has to and fight a disciplined smart fight utilising the tools he possesses to the fullest of his abilities. Against Povetkin I expect a similar level of concentration. Far from being scared I think he'll relish the opportunity to put a beatdown on the Russian and prove his doubters wrong. Povetkin is in for a rude awakening.

Where is this idea of Povetkin being small coming from?
Not everyone needs to be over 6'5.
Povetkin is a career heavyweight, who won the gold at superheavyweight (by contrast, Wilder's bronze was at 201).
Wilder debuted at 207 pounds, and their recent weights have been pretty similar.
6'2 and mid-220s is a solid heavyweight.
Don't forget, Mike Tyson is 5'10.
Bunch of ignoramuses in here.
I can't wait for Wilder to be put away so we can be free of all his fanboys.

Height is only an advantage if you know how to use it properly. On the inside it can become a disadvantage.
I have little doubt Povetkin will be able to close the distance and crack Wilder on the jaw.
Also, some tall guys can fight inside. Fury is one such example.
I have serious doubts that Wilder has any kind of inside game.

So I guess AP's coming forward in this fight, which I see as ok for Wilder. I'm thinking his plan should include establishing his long range and trying to catch Povetkin coming in while AP's throwing one of his combos. Wilder really showed great timing with the right hand that spattered Szpika. I would spend a lot of time training for that, it's his money punch. He could try and land one of those.
AP just has to do what he does. He throws good and fast combos and he moves forward quick. He'll probably reach Wilder's chin at some point, but he's got a ton of ground to cover to get there and that's his danger zone!
I love this fight. There both riding knockout streaks. I like both fighters but I think Wilder's naturally more gifted physique and length give him the win.

Look at his last fight with Wach. Wach actually troubled him at distance in the early rounds, and even cracked Povetkin on the jaw with his slow ass right hand. That was a major question mark for me who was previously leaning towards Povetkin to take Deontay out. It reminded me of past fights where Povetkin looked very hittable, namely the Chambers fight and the Marco Huck fight. Fair enough, Chambers is a fast and fluid puncher who's able to catch most fighters, but Huck's as crude as a caveman, and he nearly knocked Povetkin out and cracked him with some monstrous punches. Takam also caught him plenty.
Povetkin's looked in brutal form lately, and I think it's leading some people to forget just how vulnerable and average looking he can be at times. I still see those same weaknesses present in him now, only hidden by his much improved offence which keeps fighters on the backfoot trying to cope with his combinations.

That's the thing with Povetkin. He looks brutal against guys his own height range whom he can close with, but against taller fighters who force him to work his way in he looks a lot more vulnerable.
He can still take Deontay out, I won't argue with you there, but there are certain stylistic and physical advantages favouring Wilder that we'd all be fools to overlook.Last edited by Fury4daWIN; 02-07-2016, 02:19 PM.
