Wilder to fight Martin instead of Povetkin?

Only amongst a proportion of die-hard fans
Most casuals would have no idea who Povetkin is and wouldn't care whether they ever fought
I love boxing, have no great thing for Wilder and couldn't care less whether he ever fought Povetkin either as the latter has all the charisma of a stale biscuit
I'd much prefer that Wilder kept the title and ultimately fought Fury as the buildup would be classicComment

It's pathetic, unless Povetkin has something to do with it.

The biggest available step up for him was Povetkin. Why would he go for a lesser opponent, just for a title? If Wilder is elite he can take it from him later, or take it from whoever is holding it at the time. If Wilder is going to justify his hype train, he needs to step up and fight the best, and Povetkin would be a huge win. I actually am surprised by this, because despite all his flaws, Wilder doesn't strike me as as person who doesn't want to fight the best, I always thought of Wilder being similar to Khan in that he wants to fight everyone, he is just going to get smashed in his biggest fights or skate by on a thread of life. How is anyone surprised by this?
This gets wilder another belt and is far easier than Povetkin. IMO wilder didn't give any indication in the Spilka fight that he can defeat a top tier HWT. I had him down on my card when he KO'd Spilka.
Beat Stivernne (in a damn good performance) then fight-Molina, Duhappas, Spilka and Martin.

I'm going to wait until I hear more before I jump down Wilder's throat. The Povetkin fight has been brewing for a while now, and it's a fight in which both combatants will be healthily paid and draw large audiences. To postpone it yet again in order to pursue a worthless unification against a no name like Martin would be both highly deleterious to Wilder's image and financially counter productive for all concerned. Martin is a fighter who appeals to neither casuals nor hardcores so there's really no angle to promote the fight. The fact that he owns a belt is a pretty meaningless accolade considering the manner in which the belt was up for grabs and the way in which he actually won it.
No, I think the Povetkin fight will still happen. And if it doesn't, then **** Wilder and his punk ass.Comment
