Comments Thread For: Povetkin Taking Wilder Seriously, Ready To Go To America

Olympic gold medal winner Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) is sitting back with very interested eyes, as on January 16th Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Artur Szpilka at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Povetkin obviously doesn't read NSB. Somebody didn't tell him that Wilder is a cherry picking paper champion.

Are you saying he isn't, though?

He is a paper champion at HW, hasn't really had any interaction with the real top contenders.

Povetkin should take the fight seriously, but Wilder is still pretty much the textbook definition of a cherry picking paper champion. I struggle to think of better examples. Maybe Sven Ottke or something.

Sometimes you just need a guy from a certain country to have a belt and fight nobodies while his home crowd brings $$$ but we would be dumb to pretend he's the actual champion.

He's had 2 entire defenses. Tried to make a fight with top 10 rated Glazkov but he backed out, Povetkin fight will be made after this. Excuses will be made for Povetkin after he loses.

Wilder beats you Povetkin in a one sided fight, his size and jab will keep you at bay.. it'll look like Klitschko-Povetkin except more brutal

I think Stivere is better than Jennings and Fury but we all know Wilders opponents don't count. While everyone else gets double credit no matter who they fight.

It is a tough fight for Povetkin because Povetkin is an outside fighter with no real inside game, it is hard to beat a guy outside if he out ranges you by a lot. It is not impossible but it is hard to get to the perfect spot while the bigger guy has margin for error. If Povetkin had real inside skills he would stand a much better chance at beating Wilder but that is not his game at all, so he has to be very good if not near perfect on that night to come out on top. If Povetkin had any sort of good defense that would also help.

Stiverne is better than Tyson Fury? That's funny!

He was ko'd by a journeyman and beat another journeyman to win the WBC belt. Stiverne was the worst HW title holder since John Ruiz.

From what I've seen Fury isn't much and his reign as champion won't last long. Going by pure ability and from what I've seen Stiverne is the better fighter.
