Roach is a pretty good trainer, he is really good at cutting down on a guy doing BS and focusing on what they do best from an offensive perspective. He is very much of KISS (keep it simple ****head) philosophy that will not win any prizes for strategy or tactical awareness, but in a fight keeping it simple and focused can often be the best path.
If his guy runs into someone that can mitigate what they want to do his guys are in trouble because there is never a secondary option. Really though I don't know of many great tactical trainers that can get a guy to do something totally different mid fight, and very few fighters are ever going to be good at enough things to even make that a realistic option.
He makes some fair points but serious what is with this dude and his Roach/Pacquaio obsession? Can we get another soundbite out of him about someone else for once?
An unbiased take: This article is an exerpt from a boxing internet radio show that Jeff was on. I didnt listen to it nor did anyone else in this thread but lets be real, what else are they going to ask Jeff Mayweather about? Theyre going to ask him about Floyd, Manny, Roach all them and whatever else current is going on, cotto vs canelo ect. He just gave his honest opinion, the article sensationalizes it. Its not like hes on his twitter posting unsolicited rants about freddy roach.
Freddie has done wonders with a lot of top fighters-
Tyson
Toney
Manny
Chavez jr
Cotto
Etc
Etc
Freddie has earned his hype
every single one of those fighters became champions before they even got to Roach and already knew how to fight
Chavez was a fighter with a name and if he didnt have that name, would have had to earn a title shot....Besides beating a young andy lee, his resume sucks and he used being able to rehydrate at 180+ to his advantage. I took him as serious as he took his career.
