First off, Hopkins fought Kovalev because he decided to. Not one person on the planet would criticize a 49 year old Hopkins for not fighting Kovalev. Hopkins had two Light Heavyweight belts and the IBF was trying to force another easy mandatory. Hopkins could have easily went down that road again and milked another easy title defense. And no one would blame him. But, he wanted a unification which was either Stevenson or Kovalev, Stevenson/Haymon stalled so Hopkins went with Kovalev. Again, he didn't have to do that at all.
Second, what middleweight fight has Golovkin passed up on because of money? There isn't a single potential fight where that happened. He obviously would have taken less money against Cotto and would have been the "B side", that was never an issue, and he would have/will take less money against Canelo. Likewise was true for Sergio Martinez, Felix Sturm and so on. I feel you made that comment out of the side of your neck being there hasn't been any situation at middleweight where "A side, B side" and money was an issue. Not once. You're probably twisting Team Golovkins stance when it came to moving up in weight - they'd only do so if there is a lot of money involved. Golovkin is in his mid 30s, it's clear he wants to stay at middleweight where he belongs so it makes sense they aren't going to leave the division unless it's worth it (Froch, Chavez before he turned into a complete bum, were potential big fights), he's not going to move up for some random 168 pound guy and nor should he (same goes for Kovalev, Carl Froch, etc etc etc).Last edited by ИATAS; 12-25-2015, 01:28 AM.Comment

It's easy to concede that when you're making money by taking step asides. He's on his 3rd step aside now. I bet he's made over $2mil in step asides alone.Comment

He got paid twice by Cotto not to take the fight and about to get paid by Canelo not to take the fight. If they're paying him money to keep the belt they value the belt. They ain't gonna drop the belt if he forces his mandatory.First off, Hopkins fought Kovalev because he decided to. He got two from Cotto, over a million. With those situations it was either step aside and take some money, or don't take any money and get stepped over. Cotto was going to fight Martinez regardless if Golovkin protested and Cotto was going to fight Canelo no matter what. Cotto valued the belt both times so he paid the money.Comment

Like I said. He'd rather take the money than fight for the belt.He got two from Cotto, over a million.
