Paid 800k to masquerade around as a fake WBC champ? Oh boy!
Cotto can't escape his contract, pays GGG his 800k step aside fee

If they are trying to claim the fight would have done more buys had Cotto not vacated, then good luck trying to prove that lolComment

Steve Kim reported that once Cotto dropped the title, GB started contesting the split ratio, now it's going to court. I imagine GB will argue they would've fought Cotto without the title on the line as they tried the year before when Cotto decided to fight Martinez instead. Cotto was using the belt as a marketing tool then dropped it prior to the event.Comment

I'm told @RealMiguelCotto did pay the $800,000 step-aside fee to @GGGBoxing ...

Well, at least he still saved 300k for vacating doe
Vacated the belt only to still end up paying 800k.Comment

I think at some point shortly before the fight, Cotto realized he probably wouldn't beat Canelo. He had already agreed to pay GGG a step-aside fee, but upon realizing he would lose to Canelo, he tried to get the sanctioning fee reduced. When that failed, he just refused to pay it. He was already going to be out $800k, why pay an additional $300k to keep the belt that he knew he would soon lose to Canelo? After the WBC stripped Cotto, he figured he didn't need to pay Golovkin the $800k (he said he was keeping the 1.1mill in his bank account). He must have forgotten about a little something called legal obligation and a potential lawsuit for failing to live up to it.Comment

That kind of indicts him in the GB/RN lawsuit. Cotto paid Golovkin $800k in order to gain a split advantage over Canelo. GB is arguing that w/o the belt the split would've been more fair.Comment
